#30585 — Dual SIM problem with Moto G (2nd generation) in UK

SubjectDual SIM problem with Moto G (2nd generation) in UK
Message-ID<ec54opF9p36U1@mid.individual.net>
I have had a '3' PAYG SIM in one slot of my Moto G2 from the outset and
various other SIMS in the other slot from time to time. Hitherto,
[except in Australia - see below] I have had "Preferred SIM for mobile
data" set to '3'.

I have just acquired a PlusNet SIM which uses the EE network and have
signed up for a monthly deal with inclusive minutes, texts and data - so
now need to use that as the preferred SIM for mobile data.

Problem is that when I select that, it kills the '3' SIM stone dead and
says "Mobile network not available" when I try to use it.

This seems to be related to the fact that in the Mobile Network Settings
menu there is an item called "Preferred network type" for each of the
SIMs. This is automatically set to 3G for the PlusNet SIM, and doesn't
provide any other options. For the '3' SIM, it's set to 2G - and greyed
out. I think this is the problem, because '3' SIMs won't work on 2G
networks. It looks as if the phone doesn't permit both SIMs to be set to
3G at the same time.

The only way I can find of getting both SIMs working at the same time is
to set the Preferred SIM for mobile data back to '3' - but that's not
what I want because that doesn't allow me to use the PlusNet data I've
paid for.

It doesn't matter which SIM is in which slot - the result is exactly the
same.

Has anyone come across this problem, and is there a solution?

[FWIW, I was in Australia recently and used a local (Amaysim) SIM in one
slot - with the '3' SIM in the other slot in order to use 'feel at home'
- and the two SIMs co-existed quite happily with Amaysim being used for
data - so I'm not quite sure what's different.]

Easy - '3' SIM are 3G only and the second slot it 2G only. '3' SIM will roam onto 2G in extremis, but if you put one in a 2G phone [or in this case 2G slot] then '3' will cut you off.

So are you saying that there *isn't* a solution?

Why did it work in Australia? Would the '3' SIM have been roaming on 2G
there?

Either of the slots in my phone can be 3G - but seemingly not both at
the same time. Is there any fix for that?

That rather defeats the object of having a dual-SIM phone!

Use a second SIM on a different network, but see below.

'3' are happy for you to roam when abroad - they cream you for high roaming charges and pay relatively modest roaming charges. In the UK they have to pay the other network for access and receive little (3p/min on 321 P&G) or no revenue (contract).

Find an old 2G [only] SIM for slot 1 perhaps.

[snip]

That doesn't make sense Mark.

Australia comes under th 'Feel at Home' banner so you won't be paying
roaming charges.

3p/m for PAYG in the UK is some income, but contract does have revenue
as the user is paying a monthly charge. As for termination charges in
the UK, they are relatively minute in the way of things and there are
so many cross agreements that the overall balance is probably not far
above zero. That is why the differentiation between land and mobile,
and same provider or different provider mobile has essentially gone
and we all pay the same rate for any UK call wherever it ends up.

I wasn't specifically referring to Australia, but AFAIK 3 don't have their own network in Oz, so you would have to roam, in which case what sort of network it is does not matter.

True

Mobile nets might not differentiate between landlines, own net and other mobiles, but landline and VOIP providers certainly do.

If you look at
http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Phones/Feel_At_Home
you will see that the land of Oz is included.

Oz is certainly a 'feel at home' country, but AIUI that doesn't
necessarily mean that '3' have their own network - but simply that they
have suitable roaming agreements. I was using 'feel at home' in Oz
recently and was (I think) roaming on the Telstra network. [Probably in
2G, which was why my '3' SIM could co-exist alongside another 3G SIM -
whereas it can't in the UK].

That's not the point - you will be roaming on another SP's network.

And before you go do check the tariff - at £1.40p per minute (£84 per hour) to call a 'local' Oz number, you are most definitely getting creamed for calls within Oz. This is more than it cost to direct dial Australia from the UK forty years ago! Now it costs me 1.5p to a landline and 18p to a mobile + VAT.

Yes indeed. That's why I used a local SIM for calls within Australia and
only used 'feel at home' for calls back to the UK.

Well yes, I can do that - but it's not a solution to the problem of
wanting to use a PlusNet SIM in one slot and a '3' SIM in the other -
both of which require 3G.

The solution I'm using at the moment is to resurrect my old '3' S2
Skypephone and put the '3' SIM back in that. That means using two
handsets rather than one, which isn't very satisfactory - quite apart
from the fact that the S2 isn't smart (and no longer supports Skype for
that matter) but I can at least receive calls and texts on it.

See the thread 'Dual SIM Android phones' from October.

Basically all dual SIM phones have this limitation to some degree.
The best case are some of those intended for the Chinese market which have
FDD-LTE (aka our LTE) on one SIM and WCDMA (our 3G) on the other. But
they're hard to find, menus are in Chinese and likely they're limited by
bands (you get LTE but most of the supported bands are the ones used in China,
so LTE coverage in Europe will be patchy with the limited common bands)

The other alternative is to pick another network that supports 2G.

You've nailed it. Most Chinese-designed dual-SIM phones use the same
chipset and firmware arrangement, and that usually allows only a single 3G
SIM to be active (often restricted to Slot 1). I am not aware of any way
around this as it's built into the hardware.

Yes, that sounds about right! In my case it isn't limited to Slot 1 -
but that doesn't solve anything. It gives 3G to whichever SIM is
selected for mobile data and 2G to the other one. So, if I want to use
anything other than the '3' SIM for mobile data - which I do - I'm stuffed!

I have a Moto G 2nd gen (XT1068) also. SIM 1 is FreedomPop (3 network)
as that is the only slot they support. I only use that for data at the
moment. SIM 2 is Talkmobile which I use for voice and SMS, presumably
that uses 2G only.

Yes, Talkmobile will be using 2G.

I'm not sure what you mean by "that is the only slot they support". I
think you'll find that if you swap the SIMs, FreedomPop will work ok on
3G in slot 2 and Talkmobile will use 2G in slot 1. That is, unless
FreedomPop behaves differently from other '3' SIMs.

I have the same phone, and I can use a 3G SIM in either slot - but *not*
two at the same time. As i said earlier, 3G is allocated to whichever
SIM is selected for mobile data, regardless of which slot it occupies.

When I first got the FreedomPop SIM I tried to use it in slot 2 but that
did not work. I don't remember exactly what was happening but I think
there was a FAQ or somesuch which said to use slot 1. That might have
been a limitation of the accompanying app.

There are times when I cannot get reception on Talkmobile, which is my
primary contact number. In that situation I disable slot 1 to get TM
working. I presume that is because a 2G signal is not available and
switching off FP opens up TM to 3G.

Not only Chinese.
For SONY Xperia M dual it is the same.
The other is just 2G.
