I just came across the 'handbook' on a Philips monitor that got some
years go.

They have managed to produce 58 page booklet which has every language
that I can think of (except perhaps Klingon).

All it tells you is how to change the batteries in the remote control
and a couple of very obvious warnings which I doubt that many read.

The safety warnings are to assist in not ending up in court.

My favourite was a few years ago with a digital camera that came with
a software disk. The warning was not to place the disk in audio
equipment then listen at high volume using headphones as this could
damage your hearing.

The safety warnings are minimal, basically 'don't eat the batteries'.

I was reading somewhere the other day that in the 1960s and 70s car
handbooks that came with the car, told how to gap the plugs, set the
points and even adjust the tappets. Now they tell you not to drink
the battery acid.

My new VW does not come with a handbook just a 'digital handbook'
online. You can access it on the screen in the car I think and you can
download (when you find it) but it is not particularly printer friendly
as well as many hundreds of pages and no page numbers.

Also VW are hopeless at writing handbooks.

Thats a bit odd. Just picked up a newish ID.4 and it has a paper manual
but I see on checking these are not available for all cars.

You can find the on-line manual here :-

https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/owners-and-services/my-car/manuals.html

but you can only view online. It does not appear to be available as a
PDF download.

I think they are all written by lawyers. My old Merc one had warnings on
every page that pretty much said "Do this and you may crash the car"

The TROC has a booklet of a few dozen pages with very little useful
information in it.

I've purchased small items where the only paper documentation in the box
has been how NOT to use it (arse covering warnings) and the instruction
manual has to be downloaded.

I think that translation can be a problem, and sometimes a wish to have
a unique name for something that the manufacturer thinks is special.

When I bought my Mk3 Honda Jazz almost 10 years ago I was surprised that
it came with only a 600+ page paper manual. No online or pdf version was
available, at least not for the UK. I found a pdf in the USA for the
"Honda Fit" (strange name for a car!) and downloaded it. Quite a bit was
the same, but there were many differences too.

One particular problem was trying to find things that Honda gave daft
names to, so how they worked could be checked, and any adjustments made.
They had an automatic brake come into operation if you got too close to
anything in front with a small speed difference. This they called
"City-Brake Active system". Why, as it still works outside the city? The
abbreviation they used for this was CTBA, not CBAS. Again, why? It took
me quite a time to find this in the paper manual index, as I was looking
under "Brake". There wasn't even an entry which said "Also see
City-Brake Active system".

No, manuals leave a lot to be desired, especially as cars are getting
extremely complex these days.

Not as bad as Toyota ... showing LHD control placement in manuals for
RHD cars (and don't forget Japan *is* an RHD country).

It is often obvious that no one has ever checked the handbook against
what is in the car.

My old TROC instructions had something like ..... then turn ON but there
is no switch marked ON.

I am still trying to work out the logic behind the new one's speed limiter.

Several times I have struggled to get the various speed limiter/cruise
control/radar cruise modes to engage. Sometimes it flashes-up a
paragraph of tiny text on the dash as an explanation ... as if I'm going
to take my eyes off the road to read that ...

Well ... that would have a higher than average chance of limiting your
speed! :-)

Maybe it thinks you have a helmet with onboard graphics. Have you tried
shouting at it? Even if it doesn't work, it might make you feel better.

It does have a HUD, which I find a convenient form of display for
keeping your eyes *on* the road, I had to get some non-polarised
sunglasses to see it.

For all its modern annoyances, I don't think I've shouted at it yet ...

+1 with digital online handbooks, especially the ones that come without
an index, no search facility and are not one complete document but a
hundred separate web pages with only links for next and back.

"Re-assemble in reverse order."

Why would a modern car manual contain such outdated info. Modern cars
are pretty much maintenance free. You needed to set the tappets often,
they wore. Modern cars have hydraulic tappets that don't need setting.
Plug gaps don't change and the have electronic ignition so no points or
timing.

I checked my Tiguan manual. It does have warnings about battery acid,
but they precede the instructions on how to check the acid level, and
seem quite sensible given that in the UK most will not have not come
into contact with battery acid before. It says:-

"Battery acid is caustic. Contact with battery acid – especially if
swallowed – can cause severe burns."

so it doesn't say "don't drink the acid" but "if you do drink the acid,
it will burn" which seems useful and necessary info given an American
lady sued a microwave manufacturer after trying to use it to dry her cat.

It also has info on other things that need doing on a modern car such as
downloading and installing map and software updates for the SatNav,
Entertainment System and Operating Firmware.

The world has moved on...
