#145826 — Airport Extreme networks issue.

Using the most recent Extreme as wifi router (VM Hub in modem mode) with 
a couple of Express's as extenders.  Been fine for years.

Just fired up today to discover that my 5GHz wifi network is not 
working. iPhones and Macbook Air saying "No Internet Connection"  The 
2.4 GHz band is working fine - albeit slower!.  Nothing has changed in 
the settings, and all looks ok in Airport utility.

Is this an internal failing in the Extreme or just some setting needs 
playing with?  I am not particularly Networking savvy - I set em up once 
and then leave 'em for years!

Any ideas before I start looking for replacements (non-Airport) on Amazon?

you could try a factory reset and also make sure you're on the latest
firmware.

otherwise, look at synology, which is the closest to the apple ui, and
without that awful proprietary app.

Cheers.  Its totally up to date on Firmware - a factory reset is the 
last resort as my lad is wired into it for all his gaming gear :-(

Synology looks good but I am drawn to the Ubiquiti range (ex-Airport 
Apple guys in high places there)- Their Ubiquiti Amplifi HD Mesh router 
is the coolest Apple'esque Router I have ever seen - lovely piece of kit 
- well specced too.  The Mesh points are a bit pricey to add on though.

Thoughts?

Can’t comment on the Synology but I have a friend who raves about the 
Ubiquiti setup.

resetting it is a hassle, but it's less of a hassle and cheaper than
replacing it.

back up the configuration before resetting it. test 5ghz after
resetting and before restoring the configuration to make sure the
hardware is ok.

I switched it off for 15mins (lad was out :-) ) And the 5GHz magically 
reappeared?

So all back to being good right now - but for how long ??

Probably not, but I do need good strong 5GHz signal in 2 distant rooms 
to connect x2 VM V6 tv boxes (dont want to run ethernet).  My 2 
expresses are doing the job just fine now.  Replacing with a Mesh wifi 
router gives me the option of adding Mesh points later if the expresses 
aren't compatible and I find I need it.

Been in a couple of weeks now, and has been a revelation over standard
WiFi, I wish I’d bought them years ago. They’re much better than using
Power Plugs too.

Thanks Andy - but they only have 10/100 Ethernet ports - so not good for 
the wired connections on the 350/500 Mbps VM broadband services.

When my Airport Extreme popped I went Ubiquiti - the fancier UAP series of
mesh access points, UAP-AC-Pro. I really wanted the Amplifi but it didn't come
available in the UK soon enough.

The UAPs are very good - if you like complex systems with far more features
than you would ever use! I can dish out one-day wifi passcodes, for instance.
I never will. Excellent stuff, incredibly reliable, and apparently they now
have a phone app to configure them which is way easier than the overly complex
corporate-grade UI that I'm using. They do need wired ethernet though.

The Amplifi is much more a one-stop-shop, and since the central router is also
a mesh point you shouldn't need to go shopping for more after the two you get
in the box.

If I replaced the Extreme with the "gorgeous" Amplifi HD router - would 
my Expresses still work to extend the network SSID's upstairs if needed 
or do I have to get 1 or 2 of the extra (also loverly) Ubiquiti Mesh points?

Apple Airport Expresses can't wirelessly extend an Amplifi mesh network, 
you will need additional Amplifi gear - either those mesh point things 
or another Amplifi mesh router "cube".

I've got a couple of Unifi access points in my house which are working 
really well. I get signal where I didn't use to, Amazon Prime doesn't 
knock out the connection any more, everyone's happy, and the Unifi app 
gives me an interesting degree of insight into what's going on.

I'm still using my Airport Extreme as my external router (having 
disabled the wifi) - the next step is to replace that with a Unifi router.
