#145396 — Sub-folder Notes?

I can create sub-folders in Notes (iOS & desktop), but notes created on 
iOS in those folders don't show on the desktop (the sub-folders 
themselves do show). Notes in sub-folders created on the desktop do 
show up on iOS. Everything shows up ok on icloud.com

Why the missing notes on the desktop?

Works okay for me. macOS 10.14.6; iPadOS 13.5.

Thanks for checking.

I just tried again... created a new note in that same sub-folder on 
iPhone and it immediatley synced to the desktop - yay!

Then I amended the note that wasn't showing (in that same sub-folder) 
to see if that would nudge it into action... saw the spinny sync thing 
start and thought maybe... Except - poof! The note vanished from the 
iPhone as well. Not ideal.

10.14.6/13.5.1 here. Will mess around with it again later.

I have to say I really dislike Notes. A slight mis-correction of an important 
phone number, and the mistake is replicated to all your devices. That's 
expected, normal, and unavoidable with any sensible note-taking app.

What is ridiculous is that there's no straightforward way to recover the old 
version from a backup. Yes, I can restore my iPhone from its backup (though I 
have to be careful it doesn't immediately re-sync the incorrect phone 
number).

And I could restore on my desktop if I could remember where Notes kept all 
its data. Why can't Time Machine work with Notes the way it works with Mail 
or Pages and allow me to restore from within the app? That would allow me to 
restore just one Note instead of the whole database.

Totally agree, it's ridiculous. You've reminded me to submit another feature
request to Apple for it, as I have on most major OS versions.

I have two Notes backup apps here
<http://toolsandtoys.net/note2txt-export-apple-notes/> and
<http://falcon.star-lord.me/exporter/>

They both ‘do the job’, but it’s a manual job... I rarely remember to use
them (I just did though, just for the heck of it - probably the first time
in several months.

Neat though, thanks for the pointers. Could probably schedule one or the other
with a bit of automation scripting.

In the meantime, why not just use Contacts for phone numbers? You can 
batch delete the ones that are temporary.

Maybe the phone-number thing was just a "fer instance..."? Could refer 
to any data I guess.

I used to use (and like) Simplenote. Still have it here on all devices 
(+ web). It works well enough* but doesn't have folders - only tags. 
Which I hate...

*Saying that, it seems I have some notes in the desktop app that aren't 
on any other device - uintil I edit them. Weird. May be due to 
non-alphanumeric characters in the note title. Will have to investigate 
(sigh).

Oh!!! The reason I started replying... Simplenote _does_ have version 
control (only on the desktop app or website I think). You can just drag 
a slider back to see previous iterations of the note.
