#146155 — Mouse

I got a Magic Mouse 2 and while mostly very nice it has some issues:

1) Sometimes it decides to ignore being moved or scrolled, and I have to whack
it with a sledgehammer to remind it who's boss.

2) macOS appears to treat it as a track-pad. This means that webpages or any
app using a container based on WebKit is subject to the revolting
rubber-banding effect, even for content that has no scroll-bars.


So today I took delivery of the magnificent AmazonBasics mouse at £8 or so.
This has yer basic two buttons and a scroll wheel, although the wheel acts as
a button too.

HOWEVER:

1) Its tracking speed seems to cover a very wide speed range (this is under
mojave) ranging from Dead Slow to Full Ahead all engines plus supercharger,
and its a bit hard to adjust this nicely.

2) Worse, though, is that as I said, the wheel acts as a button, which when
clicked appears to bring up the Dashboard. But the Mouse portion of the
Control Panel is very basic and doesn't mention the third button at all.

What do people use for a basic mouse? Is there a basic mouse with a
scroll-ball? How can I configure the third mouse button?

No it wasn't. It had one design defect, namely that you had to crack it open
to clean the pea, which after 9 months or so stopped working due to grot.

to Do Nothing, makes absolutely no difference.

more like 9 days. it was horrible. 

it's so bad that you can't even give them away. i frequently see them
at garage sales and nobody wants them, not even for free.

trackpads, trackballs and mice are interchangeable devices which do
exactly the same function.

apple's magic mouse is a hybrid, where the surface is a mini-trackpad
for gesture support.

physically too small to be useful. it was junk.

The pea is just the right size for what it's needed for, and can be rotated
several times without moving the finger very far.

Notice how you jumped from them being the same thing to serving the same
function. Of course they need not -- for example, most mice do not have swipe
gestures (though as you note the Apple mouse is a hybrid).

It's far from basic, but I swear by my Logitech trackball. I've used them
exclusively for at least 20 years and am on my 2nd-3rd (home and work) one.
I couldn't use anything else so I've bought a spare to keep in stock in
case they become unavailable.

I've had three or four of those or their wired predecessor; 
I found them excellent.  I eventually had to give them up 
when I developed stiffness in my scrolling thumb and really 
missed them.  I have Magic Trackpads now and find them just 
as nice to use.  Now that I'm comfortable with trackpads I 
don't think I'd go back.

I'm also one that prefers a trackball, and did hate the Magic Mouse too, 
horrible thing that never did what I expected.

Usually use a basic Logitech Marble Mouse, been around for years, very 
simple, and just works, you can use their own software for free to set 
up the buttons.

I did also have a Kensington Trackball too, it was OK, but felt more 
'clunky', but it is cheaper.

Of course now I'm using an iPad Pro, and starting to get used to a touch 
screen and Pencil 2. How many times I've prodded my iMac screen baffled 
when nothing responds :-/.

Absolutely. For me I love my 8 button Logitech MX518... the next and previous
buttons, configured with SteerMouse (or USB Overdrive) makes a huge difference
for me. For others the shape of the mouse does not feel right, or the idea of
having so many buttons is intimidating. And that is fine.

Indeed so, I hate all the options of buttons and gestures, I just can’t
ever remember them all. KISS is my preference.
