Crucial is good but not among the cheapest brand...

About the custom firmware. Yes, but I think this now is historically. 
But to be sure do use any harddisk/SSD with OHCI ver. higher than 1,8.

I was about to make a not good decision bying a new harddisk for my 
MacBook Pro 2007/08 - a 1tb HGST TravelStar 7200rpm/64mb cache, - until 
I discovered - by luck - that this disk only has OHCI v.1,6 and was made 
for some specific ThinkPad models and therefore only can be used in 
MacBooks / MacBook Pros 2006 or older...Ups!
