If you can, you had better get the door seals fixed.

Whether or not the phone works says nothing about the effectiveness of
the door seal.

Cellphones use 800-900 MHz and/or 1850-1990 MHz, while microwave ovens
run at 2450 MHz.

Almost all contemporary microwave ovens use choke joints for door seals,
and they are very frequency-dependent (i.e. they are tuned to only work
really well at 2450 MHz), so they would probably not be a good shield
against cell frequencies.

Very early microwaves sometimes used a physical "short" for a door seal
(often a monel-metal braid over a silicone foam strip), but those got
contaminated easily and then didn't work so well. Plus being very
difficult to clean.

Very informative!

in the microwave, and have my son call me

put your cellie in the microwave for 10 min on high.

report back here on what happened.

Question is not related to active oven mode.

But as frequency of cell phone signal 900-1800 MHz
is similar to one of Microwave oven - AFAIK 2400 MHz ,
attenuation of the Faraday cage of the oven shielding
should be comparable.

agree, but the cage is for 2400 MHz and up to lower the maggie output
leakage to some not so bad region, and perhaps harmonics. seems like
40db attenuation would be adiquate. (there are real numbers out there,
but one has to do field strength to power conversion and that assumes an
antenna of some sort...)

and assuming same materials would work about the same at 900 MHz, it
seems like the attenuation may be in the range of 30 to 50 db.

=> SO if one lives near a Cell tower, it may work fine, if one is 10 or
more miles away, perhaps not.

the dynamic range on tower to cellphone is about 120 dB, (gets
complicated, 30 watts out into 120 degree antenna, pathloss, sensitivity
floor of cellphone, and then the reverse path, as cellphone has perhaps
5W out)

(subtract 40 db of the chamber from the 120db working range of
cellpone/tower)

The metal box should work fine as a shield. The choke-joint door seal,
maybe not. To work properly, it needs to be very close to a quarter-wave
at the desired frequency.

A quarter wave at 2.45 GHz is 3 cm.

I just looked at my microwave and there is nothing on the door that is
anywhere near 3 cm in size.

I guess that means the door doesn't "work properly", jimp!

To me it means that there is nothing on the door that is frequency dependant.

so put the phone in the microwave,
	close the door,
	turn it on HIGH POWER,
	for 10 min,
and step back to 6 foot away.
