Water waves on the ocean sometimes feature whitecaps, just like galactic arms sometimes feature fields. One wave is distinct from the next wave, just like one arm is distinct from the next wave. But there is no void of water between the waves, just like there is no void of stars and matter between galactic arms. It would STILL be the case that water moves from one wave to the next, and stars move from one arm to the next. It would STILL be the case that there is water between the waves, and stars between the arms. And you CANNOT HAVE arms alternating matter and antimatter if there is stuff in between that would yield obvious radiation that IS NOT SEEN. Would you claim this idea is supported by ocean waves being > distinct entities with whitecaps? Hmmm? > John, one more follow-up here, and here again I'm going to try to teach you something about science. Hypotheses have implications that can be compared to observations. For a hypothesis to survive, every single firm implication has to match observations. You have a tendency to say, "I have this idea M that explains why we see X." The problem is that you do not see that M also has a firm prediction Y and Z that observations are inconsistent with. Your response is to say, "Hey don't focus on the negative, I've got an answer for X!" But a real scientist will say, "Yeah, but it's still no good because it's ruled out by those Y and Z predictions that don't pan out." Remember, in science, the main focus is trying to shoot DOWN an idea by seeing where data might conflict with the idea. The primary activity of a scientist who has an idea is to see if the idea survives all attempts to kill it. And the one who is trying to kill it is the guy with the idea. This is what you don't get. -- Odd Bodkin -- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

The fields are not solid pipes that confine the stars, John. As a star moves off-axis, the field will weaken and have an even smaller influence. >Does it travel around the galaxy as a unit? It is a dynamic creation of the stars and other matter in the arms, which are themselves dynamic standing waves of density. So the fields will be constantly changing but will probably follow the arms. >You say it doesn't "affect much". What do you base THAT statement on? Wishful, wishful thinking? Look up the magnetic field strengths and do the math, how strongly will the fields interact with a typical star. Now tell us how strong that is compared to the gravitational forces involved. Simple. >Don't you want to know more about the fields? Sure, if you have references with actual numbers and calculations, we can see how the magnetic fields interact with the stars of the arms.

Do you know anything about pharmacodynamics or pharmacokinetics? It's off-topic, I know, but consider this: A little basic terminology can do one of two things for you. It can help you find useful information. It can help you get into useless, misinformed arguments. In the long run you'd probably enjoy the former more than the latter. I do. And why be impressed? " Odd, you twit, they cannot determine a stars distance with anything near that accuracy: 'The use of Type Ia supernovae to measure precise distances was pioneered by a collaboration of Chilean and US astronomers, the Calán/Tololo Supernova Survey.[39] In a series of papers in the 1990s the survey showed that while Type Ia supernovae do not all reach the same peak luminosity, a single parameter measured from the light curve can be used to correct unreddened Type Ia supernovae to standard candle values. The original correction to standard candle value is known as the Phillips relationship [40] and was shown by this group to be able to measure relative distances to 7% accuracy.[41] The cause of this uniformity in peak brightness is related to the amount of 56Ni produced in white dwarfs presumably exploding near the Chandrasekhar limit" -- Type Ia supernova' In case you missed it, they're not even sure of their 'standard candle' brightness. " > > Odd, you twit, they cannot determine a stars distance with anything near that accuracy: Who is talking about supernovae or for that matter individual stars? We are talking about populations of stars. How the hell do you think astronomers figure out how far galaxies are away? Do you know that the uncertainty in the measured property of a population goes down like 1/sqrt(N), where N is the size of the population? > > 'The use of Type Ia supernovae to measure precise distances was pioneered > by a collaboration of Chilean and US astronomers, the Calán/Tololo > Supernova Survey.[39] In a series of papers in the 1990s the survey > showed that while Type Ia supernovae do not all reach the same peak > luminosity, a single parameter measured from the light curve can be used > to correct unreddened Type Ia supernovae to standard candle values. Odd "Right, but the averages of the populations have much smaller variations, you twit. " Were you not talking about AN INDIVIDUAL STAR? NOT a population. And you think that it can be determined if an individual star is within rather than just either side of a galaxy? Pretty sure "not even", Odd, you twit. You need drugs- or something.

Odd Here, read this, you twit: from http://news.psu.edu/story/299655/2014/01/08/research/distance-remote-galaxies-can-now-be-measured-1-percent-accuracy "Distances to planets in the solar system can be measured to high accuracy using radar, but for more-distant objects astronomers must turn to less-direct methods. Only a few hundred stars and a small number of star clusters are close enough to have distances measured with 1 percent accuracy. Nearly all of these stars are only a few thousand light years away and are still within our own Milky Way galaxy. Reaching out a million times farther away, the new BOSS measurements probe far beyond our galaxy to map the universe with unprecedented accuracy. "Making a 1 percent measurement at a distance of 6 billion light years is a huge step forward," explained Eisenstein, "and it requires a completely different technique from measurements in the solar system or the Milky Way."" You see, Odd, galaxies are far, far away. Even an accuracy of 1% is NOWHERE CLOSE to being able to determine if a star is within the galaxy, or not. So, you can blow that silly idea out of your silly head. Who taught you Science? Oh, right, you're self-taught.

So, you can blow that silly idea out of your silly head. > Who taught you Science? Oh, right, you're self-taught. > The 1% applies to galaxies that are 6 billion light years away. Closer galaxies are associated with greater precision. For reference, the migration of stars has been observed in our own galaxy, which is about 100,000 light years across, meaning that the stars observed are on average 50,000 light years away, roughly, nowhere near 6 billion. For reference, Andromeda is 2.5 million light years away. Its diameter is about 220,000 light years across. 1%, the conservative figure, of 2.5 million light years, is 20,000 light-years. That number is 10% of the diameter, which is more than enough to localize populations of stars to the disk. Keep in mind that the precision number 1% for galaxies 6 BILLION light years away is about 0.06% for stars in Andromeda, a factor of 16 better. So yes, it's pretty easy to tell if migrating stars are in the disk. Yes, I'm self-taught. So are you, apparently, and so you don't really have much stance to judge from, do you? The difference is that I'm a little better at it than you are, possibly because I'm not terrified of reading. -- Odd Bodkin -- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

The study, which determined that 30 percent of stars have moved far across the Galaxy, is bringing a new understanding of how stars are formed and travel throughout the Milky Way. "We were able to measure the properties of nearly 70,000 stars in our Galaxy for this particular study using the innovative SDSS infrared spectrograph," said Donald Schneider, Distinguished Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State and a coauthor of the study. "This exercise can be described as Galactic archeology. These data reveal the locations, motions, and compositions of the stars, which provide insights into their formation and their history." Schneider is the SDSS-III survey coordinator and the project's scientific publications coordinator. ====================== Try reading some papers, John.
