A PATH. Not applicable. We're talking about a wave here. Where is a wave? HUP rules out a path at the energy scale of an electron in orbit. Sorry. Oh, think of this. This will blow your already fried mind. A p orbital has a nodal plane right through the middle. The probability of finding the electron in the plane is zero. Yet you can find it on one side of the plane 50% of the time, and the other side the other 50% of the time. How does it cross? hehehehehehe.... The answer, of course, is the question doesn't apply, it doesn't follow a little path crossing from one side to the other. <snicker> >You need more than one sample to establish >probability, Michael. >The LONGER the TIME spent sampling, the >closer you will get to your silly probability >number. Depends. Do we already know the probability, such as doing the Schrodinger Equation math? Doing one sample is fine, you'll get a location determined by the known probability. The next sample is independent, so the outcome of the first does not determine the outcome of the second. If you know it's a probability distribution, but don't know the actual distribution, you'll need a lot of samples, enough to be statistically significant. See the image at: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7e/Double-slit_experiment_results_Tanamura_2.jpg. The (a) part is way too few samples, you can't determine the distribution. At (e) with loads of samples, the distribution pattern is visually clear. The total time is irrelevant, as long as the system is in the proper state at each sample. (for example, if sampling a hydrogen's 1s electron knocks the electron into a 4d orbital, taking a second sample while it's still in a 4d orbital will give you a wrong answer for the second sample)

A PATH. Nope. That's YOUR thinking. You insist that the electron must reside at a particular (x,y,z). And so you believe that if it has a probability of being at (x1,y1,z1) and a probability of being at (x2,y2,z2), in your mind it has to get from one place to the other. But that's not what quantum mechanics says. It says it's at BOTH places. The wavefunction spans BOTH places at any given instant. > > You need more than one sample to establish > probability, Michael. > The LONGER the TIME spent sampling, the > closer you will get to your silly probability > number. > -- Odd Bodkin -- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

Odd "...box..." Where are the crests and troughs? You are aware that waves have crests and troughs? Not just water- the Interplanetary Magnetic Field https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b6/Heliospheric-current-sheet.gif/800px-Heliospheric-current-sheet.gif was one of the things that cued me towards the image of a turning magnetic field- if you look, there is a PATTERN of crests that is a two-crested spiral creating the wave at the Sun exactly as fast as needed to have it come around and match up with itself. Look at the picture (interpreted from data by Voyageur- so cool) This is a pattern of wave that is all one wave. So, Odd, how do your atom-in-a-box crests and troughs lay out? Where would you say they are? Any ideas?

I should correct that statement: the IMF shows a pattern of waves that is all TWO waves. Like this will create if I can make it http://users.accesscomm.ca/john/2electronorbital.GIF

Odd Rainer Beck is showing that magnetic structures- giant helical magnetic fields- encase galactic arms. Now- look at that field surrounding our Sun. Think the two might interact? The Sun's field looks like a turning screw. Which way is it screwing us? Do you still think stars will just wander through an arm?

Just like air molecules wander from one sound wave crest to the next. http://www.astronomy.com/news/videos/2015/08/stars-in-our-galaxy-move-far-from-home -- Odd Bodkin -- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

These are the people that never learn physics. It's always the same excuse. "Why would I spend money to learn something I don't believe?" My response is, "Why would you think you understand a subject you have not learned?" -- Odd Bodkin -- maker of fine toys, tools, tables
