Expansion rate is [distance increase] per [original distance] per [time].

This means that if you see a galaxy flying away from you at 200 km/sec 
and it's 500 million light years away, then a galaxy that is 750 million 
light years away will be flying away from you at 300 km/sec.
That description right there is the SAME expansion rate.

but as soon as you let things go
more than one way, stuff starts
running into each other
ESPECIALLY in 3D
and there's no way 
it would show as uniform redshift.

They do relative to us, but that's NOT A PROBLEM. There's a nice SciAm 
article from about 10 years ago that clears up that misconception for 
ordinary amateurs.

No, they don't. NOWHERE in any of the scenarios I gave of the rod and 
the plate and the grid is it possible to discern a center.

Remember for all of them, you cannot see the end of the rod, the edges 
of the plate, or the boundaries of the lattice. And you labeled the 
mark/dot/ball next to you by some arbitrary index.

There is no center in anything I discussed.

No, of course not. The ones furthest away from us are receding at FASTER 
rates -- [distance change] per [unit time] -- than the ones closest to 
us. So we would expect that the ones furthest away from us would be 
redshifted the most. And of course, that's what Hubble saw in the first 
place.

here I'll give you one more example in 2D.
From Earth we look out at a sphere centered
on earth. 
let's look only at the objects
(I am going to call them stars) 1 unit away

Okay. Even though the image above is not a circle,
we are using a circle. So measuring distance in
this model requires counting from E. So distance
from E to
P=1, A=1, Q=1, B=1, C=1, R=1, D=1 and S=1.

How do we get 1 unit of distance from earth?
We count the Character distance. So lets count
From E to A EA 1 unit
From E to C EC 1 unit
From E to Q EQ 1 unit

 Because if we
cannot agree on how to model time zero, the next
step doesn't work. And the expansion step really
doesn't work. But bear with me a little if you
just slightly disagree.

All distances in this diagram must be measured
along lines that pass through earth E. IOW,
we assume the stars are distributed on the circle
so what appears to be opposite on teh diagram
really is opposite. (we can remove that limit
in the CIRCLES discussion below.)

Lets go to the one of the other stars, Q
The people at Q look out and measure,
from Q to E QE =1 (it better! :^)
QER happens to be a straight line or nearly so.
So Q measures
From Q to R QER =2
It is the diameter of teh earth centered circle
so it should be twice the radius.

Do you agree this is a CIRCLE? Because in fixed
point text I cannot draw the image any better.
because the line spacing is fixed I cannot draw
the image better. All the objects are ONE unit
away.

Now let the universe expand for one unit.

      P.A.Q

      B.E.C
      .....
      R.D.S

We care about the motion relative to earth E
So lets count distance using the rules above.
From E to A is E.A 2 units
From E to C is E.C 2 units
From E to Q is E.Q 2 units
So all stars that began 1 unit away at zero
are 2 units away at the next time step.

CIRCLES
There is a better picture I would draw if I
could, but it's not possible in text only.
But you can do it for yourself.

If you want a better picture to see this then:
 Get paper and a compass.
 Draw point E at the center.
 Set the compass for 1 unit.
 Draw a 1 unit radius circle centered on E
 Place some points on the circle.
   (they do not have to be evenly spaced)
 Put one pair, Q and R on opposite sides
   along the diagonal.
 Set the compass for 2 units.
 Draw a circle of 2 unit radius centered at E
 Draw lines from E to each star point and
   extending past to the larger circle.
 So on the line EQ where it meets the larger
   circle, mark point Q'
 Repeat for all the other points (stars)

Now you can see how they expand relative to E.
now you can also verify that Q and R expand
at double the rate.
The other points expand at proportional rates
as well. (So if you drew A 1 unit away from Q,
then A' will be 2 units away from Q'.)

Sometimes it just takes doing things for yourself.

and I think it has to do with getting your
dimensions mixed up.
Somehow, your whole way of
thought has 2D mixed with 3D wherever
you need it to be.
And, because you can visualize 
something in 2D (sort of- like Michael's
expanding balloon with its 3D/2D
"surface"),
you then feel you can apply it to 3D.

You can't, Odd.
You really need to put down the books
and sort out all these beliefs you have.

Oh, but it does work exactly the same way. I showed you how, with a rod, 
a plate, and a grid.

time]. It ISN'T.

Expansion rate (look at the units of the Hubble constant!!) is [distance 
increase] per [original distance] per [unit time].

Two things that are separated by 90 light years will be accelerating 
from each other at 30 times the accelerating between two things that are 
separated by 3 light years.

The EXPANSION rate -- [distance increase] per [original distance] per

Equal expansion means [change in distance] per [original distance] per 
[time unit] is the same.

So let's take the points A, B for which the original locations are 
(-1,1) and (1, 1). Let's just say these are meters, though that's not 
important.
The original distance between them is 2 m.
When we come back a day later they are at (-2,2) and (2,2).
Now the distance between them is 4 m. The change in distance is 2 m.

So the expansion rate is [2 m] per [2 m] per [1 day]. That's equal to 1 
m per m per day. (Take note of this number *)

Now let's take the points A, C for which the original locations are 
(-1,1) and (-1,-1). The original distance between them is 2.8 m. (In 
case you're surprised; that's sqrt( 2^2 + 2^2 ) = sqrt 8 = 2.8.) Now a 
day later they are at (-2,2) and (-2,-2). Now the distance between them 
is 5.6, and the increase in distance is 2.8 m.

So the expansion rate is [2.8 m] per [2.8 m] per [1 day]. That's equal 
to 1 m per m per day. That is the SAME value up above (*).

I'll reiterate what I told you a couple days ago. When the Big Bang 
theory says that galaxies are receding from each other at equal rates, 
this does NOT mean that two galaxies separated by 3 million light years 
are receding from each other at the rate of 10,000 light years per 
century AND that two galaxies separated by 300 million light years are 
ALSO receding from each other at the rate of 10,000 light years per century.

What you would instead expect is that the pair of galaxies that are 300 
million light years apart are receding from each other at 100 times the 
rate of the pair that are 3 million light years apart.

Get it now, John?
