The US is pretty much the only developed country which is so religious, with the possible exception of Ireland and Poland. It's not for nothing that Ratzinger used newbies Poland to try and get the EU to "acknowledge its Christian heritage" in the draft EU constitution, which ended up being abandoned because or the Vatican-directed fighting. This of course, went down like a lead balloon among both the secular countries and the (nominally) Protestant ones.
