I would love to go, but I love my family more. At least I am not actively dissuading others. If you are not going, why are you so set against anyone else going? Wires are usually insulated using plasticised PVC. Much lower cost, much easier process. You'd have to watch for the plasticisers, though. For manufacturing PTFE - you start with methane from your syngas (CO/H2) and react that with Chlorine at elevalted temperatures (400-500°C). This yields a mixture of the different chloromethanes, among them Chloroform (Trichloromethane) and HCl. You recycle the HCl and separate the different Chloromethanes. Next, you need hydrofluoric acid (HF). You get that by treating fluorine-containing minerals (obtain them on Mars where?) with sulfuric acid from the sulfuric acid plant that you will need anyway, for other stuff. You react the Chloroform with HF to make Chlorodifluormethane, which you then pyrolyze at 550°C to 750°C to make Tetrafluorethylene. Tetrafluorethyle you can then polymerize to PTFE in a free-radical polymerization (hey, sulfate radicals should be readily available on Mars) in a suspension polymerization in water. In order to be self-sustaining on Mars, we would have to develop a different kind of technology - oriented towards what can be made with a very much reduced industrial base. This could easily be more expensive than transporting the colonists themselves. The question which technologies are needed on Mars, which ones can be imported and which ones the colonists can do without will be very complex, especially since the colonists will need high-tech from the start to even survive. I also envision a massive research effort on Earth go help the people of Mars what to do in that critical situation when they just _don't_ have that critial chemical, part, or whatever. Envision the scenes from Apollo 13 with the air scrubber, only on a much larger and continuous scale.

Thanks. This is something that concerns me. The one that I think about isn't plastics, it's microprocessors. Modern culture is deeply dependent on computers, microprocessors, and microcontrollers, as well as a myriad other chips. The underlying minimal infrastructure to build integrated circuits is vast. Can we simplify this? Is there a lower tech level at which a Mars colony could be self sustaining? One where they can slowly work up their tech level to higher levels (with full reference to stuff that's already been done)?. They need to maintain atmosphere. They need to be able to grow food, and obtain water. They need enough energy to do the above. To improve, they need to be able to expand their colony. To improve, they need to be able to find new resources. To improve, they need to be able to increase their available energy. What's the minimum tech for the first goals? For the secondary goals? pt
