We are all exposed to some amount of radiation just from being on this 
planet. This is known as background radiation. In the United States this 
averages about 3 mSv per year. For most people, background radiation 
accounts for most of their exposure to ionizing radiation during the 
year. It comes from several different sources.



Cosmic rays

Cosmic rays are radioactive particles that hit the earth from outer 
space. They come from the sun and from other stars. The earth’s 
atmosphere blocks a portion of these rays, but some of them reach the 
ground.

Because the atmosphere blocks some cosmic rays, exposure is greater at 
higher altitudes. For example, people who live in Denver, Colorado, 
which is at a high elevation, are exposed to slightly more cosmic rays 
than people living at sea level. People are also exposed to higher 
levels of cosmic rays during airplane flights. Airline pilots and flight 
attendants, who spend many hours at high elevations, are exposed to more 
of these rays, but it is not clear if they have an increased risk of 
cancer because of it.




Radiation in the earth

People are also exposed to small amounts of radiation from radioactive 
elements that occur naturally in rocks and soil. Some of these may end 
up in building materials used in houses and other structures. Tiny 
amounts of radiation may even be found in drinking water and in some 
plant-based foods as a result of being in contact with the soil. For 
people who *smoke tobacco* can account for a significant portion of the 
yearly radiation they receive.




Radon

The largest source of natural background radiation for most people is 
radon. This is an odorless, colorless gas that is formed from the 
breakdown of radioactive elements in the ground. Radon levels are 
usually higher inside buildings and homes, especially in levels closer 
to the ground such as basements. Radon levels can vary a great deal, 
depending on where you live or work. For example, exposure is higher for

Notice that nowhere does it say anything about any cancer caused by
normal background radiation and in fact it says quite clearly that
"it is not clear if they have an increased risk of cancer because of"
being at high altitudes with even higer levels.

Do you understand the meaning of the phrase "beating a dead horse"?

the horses you are reading,  are weak watered down general surface 
information.  it is not what Dr and radiation specialists Xray techs read.

  No need to alarm the public that they are being constantly irradiated 
by gamma rays (how many per second, jimp? ) all the time, and that every 
so often a gamma ray will physicslly dammage a cell (easier when it is 
splitting) to reproduce as a cancer cell and take a few years to grow, 
cause calsium build up that absorbes xray and get detected.


This area is very well researched, they had to for developing and using 
the medical devices. But you won't find that much on the internet. I 
have a good book on it, in a box somewhere, explaines just how dammage 
occurs at a cellular level, and why it scales up, and why the effects do 
not go away when there is only "background"

Yes, right, the ordinary background radiation is about 0.34 microsieverts per hour. That is from dirt. Pure Uranium is 200,000 times more radioactive than dirt, so it is safe to touch once with a hand. Radium is 2,000,000 times more radioactive than Uranium and wrist watches with Radium dials are not safe to wear.

Just as an aside. Certain background radiation particles exhibit a larger capacity for deadly biological effect.  This is known as RBE, radiation biological effect.  Ultra high energy particles can require mine style shielding to lower the dose.

These can cause a spike distribution of cell death in an exposed person. Meaning the cells dead are in a line passed through the body. There is just a normal cell recovery for this spike.  But a spike it is.
