Say the earth is a balloon. Let all the air out of the bottom of the 
balloon and then stretch the opening of the balloon around a circular 
opening (IE. a cup). because North and South are only perceived through 
orientation, the North Pole can be considered the ring circling the 
outside of the Earth and the South pole is located in the center of the 
balloon (im not a flat earther just giving a possible explanation)

As usual, half assed correct.

It was suspected over 2000 years ago, and by the late 17th Century thought
so by most scientists of the time, but not proven until the voyages of
Columbus and Magellan.

It may have been suspected by some, but the Greeks pretty well knew it
more than 2500 years ago. They even computed the radius of Earth by
lengths of shadows at different locations, at the same time of
day. Their accuracy was very close to the 6378km radius of today.

More than likely, the Egyptians, Hindus, and Chinese also already knew
the Earth was round based on observing lunar eclipes (i.e., the ones
where Earth's shadow falls on the Moon). Perhaps they never even
questioned it, the Sun is round, the Moon is round. Besides, at
nights, those ancient people weren't tuned in and turned off watching
TV reruns. Hmmm... what am I going to brainwash myself with tonight?

Yes, but they could not prove it, nor did the theory gain much traction
around the world until about the 17th Century after the invention of
the telescope and people could see that the heavenly bodies were spheres
and not discs.

Obviously the Indians and Egyptians were as scientifically sound as many 
theories today! I mean unlike the square-round fantasy of the Chinese, 
they noticed the moon and sun were disks and logically concluded that 
the earth must be one too!

The idea of epicyles was formulated by the Greek Apollonius
about 2500 years ago.

The idea of epicycles was based on a SPHERICAL EARTH model.

Please, unless you know EXACTLY what you are talking about,
don't talk.

No one said otherwise.

What was actually said was that the idea that the Earth is round
gained little traction world wide until the middle ages after the
telescope was invented and was proved by people sailing around the
Earth.

Getting a measure of Earth's radius pretty much already proves it. The
circular shadows of Earth on the Moon, pretty much proves it. No CGI
enhanced images required. 17th Century? Galileo was (1564-1642), so
that is true for the Romans. Those people tried to get Galileo to
STFU. Paint the complete picture, not some silly fraction of it.

No, not likely. We Hindus, there were no Indians back in the day, are
a very open minded people. Namaste. Rebranding us does not change us.

Maybe. Chinese is an anagram of a Sanskrit word Seenchi. But I
digress... What the hell do you -- any you -- mean by heavens? I
always wanted to ask that. From my physics centric Machian Spinning
Bucket List, one down. Count goes on. Heaven's not really a common
universal language of a word. Celestial Sphere? Regardless...

Imagine a flat Earth, a disc, a square, a triangle, a plane, a thing
whatever. Imagine you're a Greek and your many young pretty boys have
all tired and finally gone to sleep. What you gonna do? Ponder: Who
put the Plate in Plato? He he... anyway... I'll try be serious... is
the flat plane infinite or finite?  If infinite, why doesn't the Moon
or the Sun collide into the plane? For surely they must S*M*A*S*H,
it's less than common sense easy to expect. So, if Earth as the flat
plate PlatonicIanIshQ plane is finite, where's its edge? Since there
is an edge, why doesn't the water fall off like in all the local
rivers?!  Long story short... My point, humans were far smarter back

Nope, they were major clues but a disc Earth would cast a circular
shadow and calculating a radius does not PROVE the Earth a sphere.

The point is PROOF and world wide acceptance, not whether or not someone
in isolation got it right early on.

The invention of the telescope made it obvious that celestial objects
were spheres, not discs, which went a long way in getting the theory of
a spherical Earth accepted world wide.

The act of sailing around the Earth put the final nail in the coffin
of the disc Earth theory as it was absolute proof.
