I've always installed (compiled) OpenSSL without the heartbleed
functionality.  It makes no sense in my situation and it is very
easy to do.

Try that with Microsoft.  It can't be done.  You'll get only what

and can employ the "sneaker net."

Two different issues here: 
1. Hating Microsoft. For you that's a given.
2. Turning down free money. Only idiots do that. Think about this, taking
the free money and donating it to the FOSS. Wouldn't that stick it to
Microsoft? Well, not really, but it would probably make you feel good.

A statement like " If someone gave a box full for MSFT stock certificates,

Given the context of COLA, where this has been discussed before, it is
typical of the Linux loons to say something like that.

Now, do I believe that is what they would actually do?
Of course not.
They might be loons, but throwing away free money is not something even a
Linux loon would do.
Of course they would report back to COLA claiming that is what they did but
it would be a lie. Linux loons are known coast to coast for lying.

Windows virtual desktops are in no way "crude".  They're at least 
functionally equivalent to most Linux virtual desktop implementations.

In some ways they're better.  The Expo VD included with Mint doesn't 
even renumber the desktops that remain when you delete one.  And Expo 
allows you to name all the desktops the same.  Half-ass hobbyware 
strikes again.

it's not really choice at all.

It isn't about 'choice' unless there are better choices.  In almost all 
instances, linux on the desktop offers no significant advantage to make 
it the 'choice'.
