You don't get into the National Academy of Sciences on merit. You get
in because other members vote you in.

As a national academy, new members of the organization are elected
annually by current members, based on their distinguished and
continuing achievements in original research.

Heck, even if they are scientists or even top scientists. unless their field 
and knowledge is relevant to this specific issue then it really doesn't 
matter what their opinion is.
