In the past i believed hypnosis was a sham.

Lately i have experimented to see if i can fall asleep faster.

There maybe something to it.

I am a scientist, foremost a scientist. And up until now, I had believed hynosis was a sham, but am willing to give it a science run-over whether there really is something going on.

I am doing it with sleeping. Often I get to bed with many items in mind and cannot get to sleep fast enough. I like it when my head reaches the bed, do my prayer, then instantly I fall asleep. So when I have many things on my mind of that day, I seem to jostle around before I fall asleep.

So here is an opportunity to test "instant sleep" with hypnosis. Can I do my prayer then hypnotise myself to sleep instantly, so I save the time of jostling.

Well, I noticed that in falling to sleep, the eyes seem to be key factor. And what I see is like little specks of light surrounded by black darkness. In the background of my head I feel a sort of "swooning tiredness" as if there is a switch in which I "fall asleep" but the switch has not yet been flicked off to sleep.

Now old time remedies were "counting sheep" or just plain counting numbers at random. Trouble with that though is it requires a bit of concentration. And it is concentration that is in opposition to sleep.

So, what I am doing and seems to work, is that I am relaxing my eyes as much as possible and linking that with my heartbeat. Where my heartbeat acts as the watch the is swinging in hypnotism.

In my experiments so far-- about a 1 month worth. Trouble is, when I do fall asleep, I cannot remember the act itself of "falling asleep".

Somehow there is a linkup of eyes, heartbeat, and brain/mind.

Does anyone know if the heart beat slows down in sleep?

The heartbeat would be the periodic motion that the swinging pocketwatch provides in hypnosis.

So, now, the eyes would have direct access to the brain and mind, and the eyes would this be the switch that slows the heartbeat and thus the "act of falling asleep".

Now there are many medicines that cause sleep, and here would be interesting to see if those medicines affect eyesight and vision to cause sleep.

Now I notice late at night, sometimes watching TV or just plain reading, that I fall asleep and wake up an hour later, and the first thing that "goes off" are the eyes.

So I need to check physiology of where eyes are connected to brain and find out what connection physically there is. And to see if that connection is also connected with the heartbeat. So that falling asleep is a "relaxation of an area of the brain" involving eyes, heart, brain.

The quickest way to fall asleep is to
slow your heart rate using "4-7-8 Breathing":

  - Exhale completely through your mouth.
  - Inhale deeply through your nose for a 4 count.
  - Hold your breath for a 7 count.
  - Slowly exhale through your mouth for an 8 count.

Tying a plastic bag over your head is fairly quick. Plus you'll never have to do it again!

What makes us sleepy? We talked about this at a scuba class 60 years ago.Its CO2 build up in your blood.Sleep gets rid of it.Your blood gets refreshed with oxygen while sleeping. That is the reason CO2 makes death painless.Bert

Aren't you thinking of nitrogen or something? I think too much CO2
triggers the "I am suffocating!" panic response. I also vaguely hearing
about a work accident at a semiconductor facility, where a worker went
into a room filled with pure nitrogen (no oxygen) and died, never being
aware anything was wrong. The body doesn't "notice" not enough oxygen,
it's CO2 that drives the need to breathe harder.

Eating bread or bagels thickly encrusted with poppy seeds puts me to sleep. Like hell there's no opium in them! The next day it makes my brain feel like it's been on a binge as well!

Alright, no more real progress on this science of "falling asleep fast, when desired".

It is complex and complicated. Last night and early this morning I realized that the sleep pattern is somewhat regulated by the "need to piss". If you have to piss, there is no way you can go to sleep, because somehow the body is trained to not wet the bed and so, a conflicting signal, of, trying to sleep and the need to get up and piss, so that signal is turned off. So, if you hit the bed and want to sleep fast and in a hurry, yet, your bladder is somewhat full and ready to piss, you are not going to sleep. And this is compounded more in my situation with an enlarged prostate gland, so that when I do piss, an hour later I have to piss again, so that I lose an hour of sleep.

Now I believe the eyes are the key organs that involve "falling asleep" they seem the first to go when sleepy. Is there something that can be done with the eyes to instantly fall asleep when wanted. That is the big question I am wanting and hoping for an answer. So that I can fall asleep whenever I want to sleep. I have been playing around with this for months now. And every time I fall asleep, the next day-- I cannot remember if I fell asleep using the method, or I fell asleep as normally for much of my life. In falling asleep, apparently we lose some form of consciousness.

Now, is there a position that favors sleep, falling to sleep. Well my bed is set up that I can only climb in from the bed's left side, and so as soon as I am in bed, I am on my left side-- the side of my heart, and I usually lay there for five minutes and if not asleep by then, I usually feel a coldness on my back, so I then roll onto my back with face pointing at ceiling, and if not asleep by then, I usually roll onto my right side, and usually I am asleep after the right side roll.

But I think it is the eyes that controls how fast we fall asleep, provided all the other variables are conducive-- not have to piss, temperature alright. I find sleeping is easier in winter than in hot summer.

Fwiw, the following animation I made seems to put some people in a
little bit of a trance like state:

(try not to view on a phone!)

Watch it for a minute or two, look away and everything seems to be moving.
