Copying a file, instead of driving to the library,
wasting gas, is not the same thing as stealing from a tip jar.

I update my copy of Windows 8 _once_a_year_, roughly.

Last time, it stalled for _hours_.
I had to reboot, modify shit (see below),
then re-run Windows Update, etc.

My home folder is "C:\\__", but I don't let Windows know that.

I had to manually re-rename the "C:\\__\\My Documents" folder
to "C:\\__\\Sys", modify the registry (as follows), 
and reboot a few times.

Not based on what he said. Stuff like credit-card information, identity, etc 
is stolen all the time without depriving the original ower.

When you start claiming that you're pirating something in order to not waste 
gas then you've pretty much lost the argument.

"Most often" - money can't gurantee health but it will improve your odds.

Sounds like a lot of work Why didn't you just put a symlink from \\My 
Documents to where you want the data stored. Or use "folder redirection" 
which will do this for you.

I shouldn't have to do _anything_ at all;
Windows Update shouldn't be reRenaming my system folders,
nor should it hang for hours, forcing kills/reboots.

It wasn't too bad, really, because all my setting are in
this .REG file: "Jeff-Relf.Me/Win_8_.REG.TXT".

Why are you renaming system folders - what problem are you trying to solve?

I have "My Documents" mapped to a network drive so that what's effectively 
the /home folder on Windows is the same across all my machines. I use folder 
redirection to do this and it's simple without having to muck with anything.

Stress is very bad for you. It's a killer both phyically and not good for 
your mental health. The #1 cause of stress is money.

them and confusing things seems like it would cause problems. Wouldn't it

Certainly true for "some" - I know a few of these "some" people. Nothing

No, you can't just delete them, Windows reCreates them.

For me, on my system, everything installs correctly;
installers use logical paths, like %LocalAppData%.

When I put %LocalAppData% in Explorer's address bar,
"C:\__\Sys\AppData" shows up.

My Desktop is "C:\__\Sys\AppData\Desktop";
it's empty/blank, I don't use it.

my ass would be tossed in jail, and I'd be shut down.

It's happened before, many times, recently.

Those who do it anonymously, without fame or renumeration,
don't get caught.  They keep going, decade after decade.
They work hard, helping people, without payment.

Sounds like a pretty crazy setup but if it works for you then that's all 
that matters.

on a mountain.

You know Rolf, that one can have a vasectomy and still have a wife. One 
can even have kids. As for stress free ... a wife is not the recommended 
way to achieve that. Just ask HVAC. Of course he considers all the men 
he takes fishing on BrokeBack lake to be his "wives".
