This is the tenth landing failure of 17 attempts to land something on Mars or one of it's moons. -- Jim Pennino

Agree. Better: a well focused program to solve a real problem could produce results with less funding ... allowing more money for additional well-focused programs to solve real problems. The problem of going to Mars is not a "real" problem. It revs up some high tech indsutry that would produce spin offs that are useful for real problems; but hoping for serendipity from a small fraction of a huge expense is an inefficient plan. Can *no* one think of a *real* problem that would have comparable spin offs while solving a real problem? Here is one: Safe disposal of nuclear waste from power plants ... possibly by transutation to something that isn't so nasty instead of better encapsulation of bad stuff. And another: Building nuclear power plants that produce less problematic waste. I haven't read enough about it, but thorium plants may fit here.

It has the gold. It will use a Saturn V type rocket ,and walk on Mars. First it will have a base on the Moon. We could have had a base, but again GOP mafia took over NASA after killing JFK,and we ended up with the Killer Micky Mouse shuttles that could only go up 200 miles. Now after Annenberg stole 2 billion for 43 years we got no man space program. China has 250,000 in its space program. TreBert Ps I wonder if rice can grow on Mars.

On Mars that doubtful. Cacti might grow better. But whoever gets to Mars first, they need to send a team of archeologists to examine the artifacts of the ancient civilization they will find there! Agreed. The only reason to go to Mars would be to show the world we have money to waste.
