Sure they could, all it takes is power.

About 40 years ago or so the hot thing was to blow up wires with huge
currents, today it seems to be to blow up random stuff with lasers.

Blowing things up is always cool.

My first job out of college invloved cutting lasers; I am well aware
of how such work.

A laser pulse "only 20 quadrillionths of a second" long (according to 
asshats' media morons) isn't going to do much cutting, jimp. Of course 
blowing things up with lasers is always cool, but you aren't going to 
blow much up with pulses this short.

Lasers, Centre of sun, million millionth of a second, devised new 
mechanism, first time Yada Yada. The "race" is now on! Yeah Science is 
all about a "race" and pulling it all out with just seconds to go! I 
watch TV and go to the movies!

How many lasers will it take to heat the Earth for one day.Get the picture.A spark can blow up a 747,and in reality only has a high temp.
