Musk's mars rockets will launch about every 2 years (26 months) The Mars rocket is estimated to have a total launch weight (Rocket+fuel+payload) of 10,500 tons (not "millions) Let's be generous to you and use the round number 10,000 tons as the fuel weight. lets see how many rockets nee to be launched each cycle to match the world consumption of fuel by cars. There are over 1 billion cars in the world. Driven 1% of the time or more doesn't matter. World wide cars consume roughly 20,000 barrels of gasoline per DAY. (using 2012 data) A barrel is about 300 pounds, so 6,000,000 pounds or 3,000 tons PER DAY. So lets cycle the clock. in two years, cars will consume 2 years*365 days*3,000 tons = 2,190,000 tons Interesting, the numbers are close. At 10,000 tons per flight there have to be only 219 flights. This was assuming about 95% of the total launch weight was fuel. (10,000/10,500) There needs to be oxygen also, so the real fuel weight may be about half that. So really about 440 flights. So your figure was wrong if it was a per flight number. But not too far off for a total number (all flights combined). The CO2 emissions will be less per ton, because the Mars rocket is going to use methane rather than rocket fuel. Actually a much smaller number of launches than I thought. But you are right. It is a concern. See what can happen when you look at the evidence. If you had just done the math you could be wagging your finger saying "I told you so!" :) ed

They are probably public too. a bigger problem is how to get rid of heat from a nuclear plant on Mars, no water, no air, no liquids to conduct heat away and radiate it or loose it. Nuclear power plants are 33% effecient. you can put up a field of radiators to radiate it into space, but how big, and what made out of, it is hard to get rid of 10 Meggawatt in a near vaccum, no fluids

However, there is a bill before congress to fund R&D for Mars of about 16 Billion, introduced by Ted Cruz. call congress and tell them to spend that money on Jobs for unemployed, and underemployed. Hardly any new technologys will be found either, with Mars stuff.
