   clean pigeon dropping out of their microwave horn antenna. They DID
   discover the predicted CMB, and analysis of the CMB does show the
   universe to be flat (Euclidean).

Presumably, yes.  So far, measurements show that the observable universe is 
flat.  Unfortunately, we cannot look beyond that, so we have to defer to 
what geometry, relativity, and quantum mechanics have to say about the rest.

so Wormley cannot decide if universe is flat or open, just not closed,

The 94% of the universe that is missing has the shape of a SADDLE,and that fits with my CONCAVE & CONVEX Theory. It gives the universe its attraction locally and its acceleration far out. Get the picture  TreBert

I know that the saddle shaped universe used to be a respectable theory, but I think it went out with horses and wagons!
