I said one has to have enough intelligence to deal with those things,

Probably this is more accurate now than in the past because of the WWW. When I got my B.Sc., there were really only a few courses (final year dissertations, etc.) that needed a trip to the library to perform autonomous research & independant thought. Most courses only required one to pay attention in class. Usually the textbook would be the only reading material required. Structured thinking & writing, yes. Exercises from the textbooks were important for passing the exams, but writing lab reports probably gave me more skills directly applicable to any job I might ever find myself in.

I was referring to *all* the activities leading up to earning a degree, including writing and defending the thesis. Even if you attended all classes, passed all exams, and wrote all lab reports, it requires the skills I mentioned to finally, and quite literally, *earn* the degree. From the Wikipedia entry for 'grok': Grok /ˈɡrɒk/ ... Grok means to understand so thoroughly that the observer becomes a part of the observed ----------- Grok was coined by author Robert Heinlein in the early 60's in his book Stranger In A Strange Land. Hippies soon glommed onto the libertarian ideals espoused in this book. Heinlein hated those hippies. He was known to call the police on the hippies who would hang out on his property

HVAC may know zero science, but clearly (as evidenced above) as a
strategic writer he knows his craft and it's history! (Obviously he
learned all his "science" from Heinlein)

Isn't it fascinating, John, that you accuse me of having a spellchecker that won't admit your ideas, when it is YOU that says that point particles are just outright nonsense and are incomprehensible to you? Who's got the mental spellchecker, me or you? > > No! There are no 'point particles'!! Everything > is infinitely complex, at even the smallest of > scales. Well, you SAY this, John, but here's the thing. Just because you utter it, doesn't make it necessarily so. In SCIENCE, and I assume we're talking about science here, any assertion that anybody makes must come with a testable consequence, something NOT YET OBSERVED but FEASIBLE TO OBSERVE. This is the way and the ONLY way that science puts assertions to test to see if they are actually right. So here's the thing. You've made a statement that everything (that's EVERYTHING) is infinitely complex (that's INFINITELY), but you've not given any indication anywhere of any testable consequence of that, where that testable consequence means something that has not yet been observed, but could reasonably and feasibly be observed. On that, you've offered NOTHING. So as a scientific claim, it's useless. On the other hand, models involving point particles make lots and lots of testable predictions, which included a number that had never before been observed until an experiment was designed to test it. And guess what? Those testable predictions matched experiment. So from a SCIENTIFIC standpoint, the zero volume assertion has something that your infinite-complexity assertion does not. Now, I get that you don't necessarily like the idea of how science tests assertions, and want to consider only what is "acceptable to the mind". But since this is a science group, I think you're out of luck on that. > Yes!! There IS structure- and that structure > has structure- for as far as can be followed. > Yes!!! There HAS to be volume. The chemicals in our brain decide what we will see and what we won't. A problem with these, like in schizophrenia, or a temporary change, by hallucinogens for example, will suddenly allow us to see what we have programmed ourselves to mentally ignore. ------------- Taking LSD and seeing flags on people's faces or clouds dancing in the sky may be fun for a child, but it is hardly reality. ------------ For Odd or HVAC to receive ideas foreign to their 'point particle no structure no volume gravity from nothing' worldview will never happen, because their spellchecker just won't let that happen. ------------ That which you call spellcheck, I call science and the scientific process. You deal in the world of The imaginary. That's all well and good, but it has no place in the world of science. No!!!! Gravity is not from nothing. ------------- When you say gravity from nothing... Why would you possibly believe that? Gravity is well understood by anyone with knowledge of physics. If you are having trouble understanding it, I suggest that you up the dosage of lsd25.

HVAC also lives in the world of the imaginary and loves it!
He's right this time, though. It's not science...not that HVAC knows
what science is anymore than Odd does.

Ask Cosby about being paranoid of Libs. They sure taught him not to go
around lecturing blacks on Lib lies. Single mothers are HEROES! Gang
life is good for a neighborhood. Kwanzaa is a "real holiday" that
replaces all that Christian nonsense with REAL AFRICAN belief.
HVAC believes in Kwanzaa. If you tell blacks they are American and not
African and you get 25 women on the cover of a mag calling you a rapist
(not a shred of proof, natch).
Hey Harlow, isn't drugs the way you get to have sex with all those
underage tiny foreign girls?

What happened to that foot cure you "invented". Must have worked about

There is no foot cure. There are no filters.
