Sammy fails to grasp the totality.

By cycling to work everyday the average commuter would deeply inhale so
much carbon monoxide and particulates that long-term health consequences
would be inevitable.

When I cycle, I avoid riding down or even near major traffic arteries
expressly for that reason

Also, there are sociological factors at play.

Unless employers, and other businesses or shops, provide absolutely
secure facilities for locking bicycles, theft would be rampant in
any urban area.  Most cyclist will lock their bikes in a most insecure
fashion.  The standard bike locks are a joke and can be "snipped"
in a matter of seconds by even the dumbest of thieves.

Except in San Francisco, the gentrified techie capital of Google,
Facebook, etc., where all the biking is liable to occur.

There, the technique would work, on average, only half the time.

Bicycles only work for the young who live in beehive cities.

Riding a bicycle in downtown LA is a supressed death wish.

  Practice what you preach, Sam? I've been commuting mostly by bike for 35 years now.

  Mind you in Phoenix, I found it helpful to open-carry a nickel plated .45 so car drivers could "see" me.

   I still bike too -- but less than I used to... in the 70s 120 miles a
   week was pretty typical. Now, maybe a few miles per week.  I pretty
   much avoid traffic these days.

Sam is a "green" his ideas of a return to the past are for other people 
not for him. Like all ignorant greens he is an "idea man" and has no 
concept of science. I'm sure he has never considered that a human riding 
a bike (one you pedal) is a CO2 generator. Even worse after a dinner of 
beans they are also a methane generator which is a far worse greenhouse 
gas. But don't confuse Sam with facts.
