It's difficult to lay off Europeans. So, a company does what ever it needs to do to improve stock market performance (that's all that matters). The money saved by reducing US operations allowed the company to buy back a bunch of stock which made investors very happy. This, of course, lowered US stock prices which made it possible for investors to purchase more stock to position themselves for a big buyback in the next cycle. This capital makes it possible for the company to buy out some competitors which allows them to control the market and raise prices which is seen as good performance and strong growth positioning the company for a buy out. Top management will make a killing and be in a position to buy/found more companies with manufacturing operations in low labor cost countries. I'll just get a new job with a US owned company with foreign subsidiaries that will move US operations off shore for the tax and operating cost benefits. It's all the rage these days. And very good for Wall Street and the GDP. -- Grizzly H.
