As any fool can edit Wikipedia, it is a horrible reference. But the 
statement does have a reference which discusses lopsided halos as causes.
It also mentions M 101 as an example, and that galay is tidally distorted
by close smaller companion galaxies.

Now let's hear about the violations of the law of conservation of angular
momentum, and the source of the enormous torque causing precession. And what
problems precessing spinny things solve.
