Look at this graph. Is it monotonically increasing? If not, interesting! There must be negative mass or something where an increased radius encloses smaller mass! Go claim your Nobel Prize! Otherwise, kind of boring. Now subtract the visible mass at each radius. What you are left with is invisible mass. Now, if your name is John Sefton, go find a 5 year old to explain "invisible heavy stuff" to you. Otherwise, you found the distribution of dark matter in the galaxy.
