And yes, it is quite COMMON that a previous result that is wrong but a good approximation shows up as the first term when you do the expansion of the terms. I'll show you another example, since you claim to be competent in math. A long time ago, people wrote this expression for kinetic energy: K=(1/2)mv^2. However, we now know this expression is wrong, but is good as an approximation. What we know now is that the total energy is given by E^2 = ( mc^2 )^2 + (pc)^2 = gamma*mc^2 And then K = E - mc^2 Now, I claim that when you expand this correct expression into a series, the first term is going to be (1/2)mv^2, even though we're not going to start from (1/2)mv^2 at all. So let's evaluate what's on the right hand side, Jay. This is going to just be basic algebra, so I assume you are going to be able to follow. K = gamma*mc^2 - mc^2 = [gamma - 1]mc^2 = [1/sqrt(1-(v/c)^2 ) - 1]mc^2 Now this looks like a complicated expression but there's a nice little approximation that works when x is small: sqrt(1-x) = 1 - (1/2)x - (1/8)x^2 - (1/16)x^3 - .... And so 1/sqrt(1-x) = 1 + (1/2)x + (1/8)x^2 + (1/16)x^2 + .... Here v/c is small so we can use that to keep only the first two terms. K = [1 + (1/2)(v/c)^2 + ... - 1]mc^2 = (1/2) * (v/c)^2 * mc^2 = (1/2)mv^2 And so you can see how an approximation corresponds to what you believed was true before. -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables
