Of those 40, Mt Baldy, or more properly, Mt San Antonio as it is officially known (only locals call it Mt Baldy) ranks #33 in height, so it is not particularly high. While there is a Mt Baldy ski area, it is fairly mediocre as ski areas go and the Mammoth Mountain ski area is far larger and far better known. There are in fact many, far bigger and better ski areas that would attract people from a different part of the country. No one would travel to Mt Baldy from Boston just to ski. The highest mountain in the contiguous United States is Mount Whitney at 14,505 feet. San Gorgonio Mountain, the highest peak in Southern California at 11,503 feet, and 7th in the contiguous United States, is where the plane crashes of Dean Paul Martin and Dolly Sinatra occured. Mt Shasta, at 14,179 feet is a potentially active volcano and could blow like Mount St Helens. The bottom line is that there is nothing special about Mt Baldy and nothing happens there that would attract any notice in Boston. -- Jim Pennino
