Another common misconception.  There is no monument.  The only face that has 
been found on Mars so far is a *rock* face (in the geological meaning of the 
word) on which shadows fall in a certain fashion during a certain season.

Again, the reason for some humans to believe that it were a sculpted face 
was comparably poor image resolution when that rock was first observed 
combined with an evolutionary beneficial inclination of humanoids to see 
patterns even where there are none.  We are particularly trained to see 
faces because it is important for one’s survival to be able to recognize 
individuals by their face (for example, to recognize one’s mother whose is 
probably the first face that one sees).
