It was not a new phenomenon in 1971; it was a first direct observation but there is evidence that a CME was observed during an eclipse in the 19th Century. What a CME actually is was theorized well before 1971, the observations in 1971 proved it. Something is "discovered" when it is first noticed and CME's were noticed long before 1971. Determining what that discovery is is something else. CME's were explained in 1971. -- Jim Pennino
