Whether motion starts, happens, or ends, is *observer-dependent*.
“Beginning absence of motion” is therefore, too, an ill-defined concept.
Your layman definition of “event” is at odds with the definition
of “event” in physics where an “event” is a position in spacetime.
Suppose that the motion of an object ends for one observer whom
we consider “at rest”, then it is the spacetime position of that
object that is the event, not the fact of its stopping for that
observer. As the object is moving, it is moving through spacetime,
which can be seen in a spacetime (Minkowski) diagram:

accelerating, then moving with uniform velocity, and finally
decelerating to relative rest again in event e₂, through flat
spacetime; compared against that of an object moving at
the speed of light in vacuum, c. (As one can see, an object
is moving through spacetime even if it is not moving through
space (x): its temporal coordinate changes *continuously*.)
