It does not mean when you compare it to another clock. No matter the clock, when it goes from zero to 1, then it went from 0 to 1. That is all!

Sorry, but that is just gibberish to me. I'm talking about science. In science there is no problem with something running slow. It may be a problem in math, but then math is getting in the way of YOUR understanding of what is really happening.

When a clock or object moves, time slows down for that clock or object. PERIOD. That means it takes LONGER for it to go from 0 to 1. If you did not COMPARE it to another clock, you would not NOTICE that the clock runs slow.

I'm sorry if that is too complex for your imagined "superior mind," but it is the way the universe works.

At the top of a mountain the length of a second will be shorter than at the bottom of the mountain, but (to quote Einstein) the "same laws of electrodynamics and optics will be valid for all frames of reference for which the equations of mechanics hold good." Changing the length of a second does not change an equation or a law.

Case in point!

Correct. But you dont fully understand the meaning of that expression, to "run slow". For you to declare that an actual device ran slow, you must have performed an observation (a measurement). What you did is that you observed (noted, logged) that it indicated zero, then sometime thereafter, it indicated 1; you only performed two punctual observations. You did not observe it at every picosecond. The device "beeped" as it indicated "1" and thus it indicated "1". This *then* is called "run slow".

What "really happened" in between, can never be empirically known unless you actually make the observation in between.

> When a clock or object moves, time slows down for that clock or object.

How do you know? How would you verify that?

> That means it takes LONGER for it to go from 0 to 1.

How do you verify that? What you did is compare its value with YOUR clock.
As they coincide, it indicated "1" and yours indicated "5". This *then* is colloquially said to "run slow". The facts were ONLY 1 & 5.

EXACTLY!!! Between 0 & 1 (or your watch 0 & 5) you did NOT compare both clocks, so you cant say it ran slow. You only compared then as they indicated 1 & 5. You havent a clue what happened in between since you did not make any observations in between. Maybe God made them to display 1 & 5.
All you can conclude is that they displayed 1 & 5. This *then* is colloquially said to "run slow".
hey conflict with your beliefs.

What you did is that you observed (noted, logged) that it indicated zero, then sometime thereafter, it indicated 1; you only performed two punctual observations. You did not observe it at every picosecond. The device "beeped" as it indicated "1" and thus it indicated "1". This *then* is called "run slow".

You can't. But I can. LOGICALLY, I understand time dilation and that time runs slow when an object moves or is closer to a gravitational mass. I do not need to make a comparison every picosecond. That is only for mathematicians and quantum mechanics who need to have everything defined as quanta, even time.

> You only compared then as they indicated 1 & 5. You havent a clue what happened in between since you did not make any observations in between. Maybe God made them to display 1 & 5.

A mathematician may need to cite God, since he cannot EXPLAIN the difference in time. But a scientist can explain that time ran slow do to the effect of time dilation, so he does not need to reference God. Time Dilation is a natural phenomenon.

Colloquially and logically. It may conflict with your beliefs, but that's your problem.

No. Your conclusion of "run slow" does not logically follow. It may be your belief or intuition, but those are not a logical process that led to the conclusion.

You think you do, but you dont. You dont even comprehend the meaning of the expression "run slow".

There is no need for an "explanation". The formulas (LT's, say) give the correct results; it makes correct predictions of past and future exp's (this is how scientist got to build all these little nifty things that work!)

No....he does not explain; he simply repeats, with different words.
The observation of t' < t can be voiced as t'<t. Some **THEN** call this "time dilation" or "run slow". These are not *explanations*, but just a repeat, a rewording of t' < t.

Yes, t'<t is an experimental fact. That is what you meant.

I think I'm beginning to understand your arguments. You only understand the mathematics, so you cannot explain anything except the mathematics in mathematical terms. You have NO CLUE as to what is really going on.

Mathematics represent only those factors which can be expressed in mathematical form, and you have to DISTORT reality to make the math work for time dilation.

It boils down to Einstein's theory versus Quantum Mechanics. In Einstein's theory (AND IN REALITY), time is CONTINUOUS. In Quantum Mechanics, time must be broken down into (non-existent, hypothetical) "quanta." That is why you cannot comprehend something that is continuous, like time slowing down.

It's all VERY interesting. I'm saving this discussion. It might make a good book someday about how mathematicians THINK when they discuss physics with someone who is not a mathematician.

Mr Lake, your level of confusion on this issues is properly amazing.
Nothing you wrote makes any sense concerning Relativity or Quantum

What nugget? Mathematicians are considering using a "chronon" as a quanta of time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronon

It MAY be. That would imply some maximum frequency (i.e., some maximum
energy per quantum. But we presently have no evidence for that.

Most physicists believe that QM will be the ultimate victor, but Lee Smolin
disagrees. He is quite a queer duck, though. His "principle of precedence"
presumes something that will surely cannot be true.

And some physicists have shown that GR is emergent from QM:

I've read a lot of stuff by Lee Smolin. We seem to agree about a lot of things. I have comments about what I read on my web site. On March 1, 2016 I commented on this article: http://www.phys.lsu.edu/faculty/pullin/sciam.pdf I reviewed a couple of his books on October 30, 2016. Somewhere, though, I recall that he argued or stated something I TOTALLY disagreed with, and I stopped paying attention to him after that.

I think that both sides need to really understand time dilation. Time Dilation seems to be the dividing line. And, if you really understand time dilation, I think it will become clear that Quantum Mechanics is just a useful tool, it cannot accurately describe the universe.

If you understand time dilation, you see that there are endless misconceptions about relativity that were created and fostered by quantum mathematicians.

But, that's just my opinion.

CONSIDERING. That is not incorporated into quantum mechanics by any
stretch, and it is certainly an inaccurate statement to say that quantum
mechanical treatments NECESSARILY involve quanta of time. Quantum
mechanics does NOT insist on that.

Note this does not say that quanta of time are essential to quantum
mechanics. That was your OWN invention. And again, you arrived at that
conclusion through popularization articles.

There is nothing to "explain". This is why you cant explain it neither. You claim that you can explain time dilation, but you havent explained it. You simply repeated "it runs slow thus time dilation is explained". Well, that is not an explanation, but just a repeat of the result of empirics.

??? Totally irrelevant to the discussion. The discussion is about the meaning of the expression "run slow". This has nothing to do if time is discrete or not.

Mathematicians dont discuss the meaning of the words used in physics, nor its philosophies, nor its empirical results. Mathematicians just play with equations. The interpretations are left to physicist & philosophers.

> with someone who is not a mathematician.

Indeed, you are far from being a mathematician. You fail at the simplest tasks of logic. I wonder how you would fair at a simple highschool math problem. If you are math limited, you are in no position to discuss physics.

Colloquially yes. Logically no.

You'll find out, Ed, that time dilation is not the result of clocks
running slow. It is the result of the relativity of synchronization of
clocks.

You're jumping too far ahead, too fast. You've skipped some essential steps.

Before you can deal with the twin puzzle or GPS or Hafele-Keating, you
need to learn where time dilation comes from in the simpler case of two
pairs of clocks passing each other. This is why Einstein in his
popularization chose an example of two lightning strikes and a train on
a track. Start there first. This will help correct your "logical"
misunderstanding that it has to do with slow-down of clocks.

NO! If you start with two pairs of clocks passing each other, YOU LEARN NOTHING ABOUT TIME DILATION. You ONLY learn about RELATIVITY. And the lesson will be an BAD lesson that will cause ENDLESS misunderstandings.

Einstein's train examples were also about RELATIVITY, not about time dilation, and resulted in a hundred years of misunderstandings.

The real, natural phenomenon of time dilation CAUSES the relativity issues. If all you do is study relativity issues and examples, YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND TIME DILATION.

Let me put it to you differently. Time dilation is not clocks running slow.

I'm happy to explain it to you, provided you FIRST look at Einstein's
paper from 1905 and acknowledge that Einstein said, and relativity
continues to say, that a pair of clocks that are synchronized in one
reference frame will be found to be not synchronized in any other frame.
Here's the soundbite, though I do suggest you reread the whole paper:
"Observers moving with the moving rod would thus find that the two
clocks were not synchronous, while observers in the stationary system
would declare the clocks to be synchronous."

and further...

"So we see that we cannot attach any absolute signification to the
concept of simultaneity, but that two events which, viewed from a system
of co-ordinates, are simultaneous, can no longer be looked upon as
simultaneous events when envisaged from a system which is in motion
relatively to that system."

You earlier stated that, as far as your common sense tells you, any two
clocks that are synchronized with each other in one frame must
necessarily be synchronized with each other in any frame. You also
stated that Einstein said nothing about the synchronization of clocks
being different in different frames. Since you clearly have made an
error here, at least embrace that correction. THEN I can show you how
that is relevant to time dilation and length contraction.

Then you have not understood what Einstein wrote about it.

Sorry, but he was setting you up to understand how time dilation comes
about. Please CONSIDER the possibility that you have made a mistake
early on, and that there may be a need to retract some of your thinking.

Sorry, Ed, but it's clear that you did not understand much of what
Einstein wrote.

Ed, consider the quote from the 1905 paper. These are Einstein's own
words. If you think he is WRONG, then come out and say so. If you think
he was right, and that his words were later distorted, then at least
let's get straight on what he actually said.

If at this point you are completely unable to confront having made a
mistake because you have too much invested in it, then you will be
unable to learn anything. Learning involves recognizing your own mistakes.

Yes it is....The SRT math says that a second on a moving clock is worth gamma second on the observer's clock.

No, sorry Ken, you have misread the mathematics.
This is not unusual for you. You are illiterate with mathematics.

Nope I have not misread the math. The LT says:
Delta(t')=gamma*Delta(t)

This is just another thing, which is correct.
