In one object's frame, the 'KE' of the other object is 1/2mv^2 BUT ONLY HALF OF THAT IS AVAILABLE TO DO WORK. The other half must go in heat or radiation in a 100% merging of the two. Obviously the amount available depends on the elasticity of the collision. In any 100% elastic collision, there is no change in total KE as calculated in all frames. --

I imagine that this is yet ***another*** of the situations where, presented with an irrefutable argument, you try to re-write history, claiming that you ***meant*** something different than what you did, and that you were right all along. You are too juvenile to understand the point. I originally said that the 'kinetic' energy 1/2mv^2 is the maximum amount of work that can be extracted by bringing a moving object to rest. I originally said to assume no heat loss (which of course is impossible) because I wished to emphasize another aspect of this. The point I wanted to make is that the amount 1/2mv^2 is NOT always available even in lossless situations because of the recoil of whatever absorbs the moving mass. If the absorber is a large object like the Earth, the energy available approaches that figure..but for small objects it is nothing like it because the absorbing object gains momentum (relative to its original frame). The point you made is the well known consequences of the conservation of momentum and conservation of energy. The point I have been trying to get across is that whether a collision between objects is 100% elastic or 100% inelastic, the overall changes in energy distributions are te same in all frames. I showed the maths last year and I'm not going to bother to do it again. > --

Nor is momentum or kinetic energy. This is not to say that those properties are intrinsic properties to anything else like the reference or some other nonsense. They just aren't intrinsic properties, period. It's also not true that they mathematical conveniences. They are real properties, but extrinsic ones. -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

A meter stick remains the same length in all frames of reference. The current failed definition for length (1meter=1/299.792,458 light-second) is not an intrinsic property because it is observer dependent..

Your meter stick can not change physically in any way just due to the fact that somewhere an observer starts accelerating relatively to it.

Extrinsic properties do change. Extrinsic properties are properties where the definitions of the properties themselves specify the relationship between the object and the reference frame or the state of the observer or some procedure. A good example of this is speed. It makes absolutely no sense to say that the speed of an object cannot possibly change in any way just due to the fact that the observer is now in a different state relative to the object. Of COURSE the speed of the object is different, even though no physical interaction with the object occurred to effect that change. Speed is an extrinsic property. Nor does it make sense to say that speed is not a "valid" physical property. Of COURSE it is valid. The kinematics of bodies is one of the core physical descriptors of a system. Overly vague and uncareful comments like "cannot change physically in any way" are so unhelpful that they are essentially wrong, and declaring such things to be True by Decree is also just arrogant and silly. -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

Let's get something straight here, Ken. The speed of SOME things changes when you change reference frame. The speed of SOME things do not change when you change reference frame. Your assertion is not a valid argument. Material length is an intrinsic property. They keep a motel bar in paris to define the length of a meter. That meter stick remains the same length in all frames of reference. That means that material length is intrinsic. The current failed definition for the meter (1 meter=1/299,792,458 light-seconds) is not an intrinsic property....Why? Because the light-path length for a meter stick is predicted to be observer dependent. An observer will predict the light-path length of a moving meter stick to be 1/gamma meters and this prediction is based on the assumption that the light-path length of the observer's meter stick is its material length. You need to pull your head out of the SR shit and learn some new physics. > > Assertion is not an argument. > > > A meter stick remains the same length in all frames of reference. And it came with the instruction that it was ONLY valid as a meter when at rest. That bar now is not fit for use and is a museum exhibit at BIPM. > That meter stick remains the same length in all frames of reference. No, that was never a claim of the platinum-iridium bar, and it was known not to be true. No idiot.....it is still the standard for the meter and we use it daily. Your new definition for the meter (1 meter=1/299,792,458 light-second) is bullshit....it is invented to save SR. > > > That meter stick remains the same length in all frames of reference. > > No, that was never a claim of the platinum-iridium bar, and it was known > not to be true.
