Whether a real person exists on which a mythical supernatural character is somehow inspired is irrelevant. The mythical supernatural character STILL doesn't exist.

If the character has supernatural abilities he doesn't exist. If the character merely lies and claims he does, its at least possible that hes a real person. Whether there was a historical person that was inspiration for the mythical Zeus is irrelevant. Zeus as he is meant doesn't exist. Neither did Jesus or Bhudda. Whether actual historical peoples existed that served as inspiration for these mythical characters doesn't matter any more than in the case of Zeus, but in all three cases there is no reason to believe that there were.

Notice that you do not pose that burden on those, but you DO for the historical figures for which fictional characteristics have been associated. Correction, you don't even pose that burden for any disputed figures (like Arthur Pendragon, who is alleged to have pulled a sword from a stone because of the pureness of his heart) who have been attributed nonsupernatural fictional characteristics. You only pose that burden for disputed historical figures for which SUPERNATURAL fictional characteristics have been attributed. I have no insight as to whether any of the 108 billion people who have EVER lived might or might not have had exceptional abilities, especially those who lived well before 1600, where historical documentation gets really spotty. I know there are people who have been declared dead by medical authorities and then got up from a morgue table 2 days later. I know there are people who have been able to take a helicopter overpass above a city and then draw the entire city in completely accurate detail from memory. I know twins who feel pain in limbs when the other is hurt in the same limb, even though they are separated. It's my old gripe that the near complete eradication of the Christian _mysticism_ (as opposed to Christian _religion_) traditions from Western cultural sphere was, in the long run, a mistake. I fully appreciate how thoroughly people were fed up with the abuses of the church in the old days, and I don't know how _else_ this should have been handled during the Age of Enlightenment. Nevertheless, _today_ one can clearly feel the lack of the relevant cultural "artefacts" and metaphors. Today Western culture is a bit as if the Age of Enlightenment thoroughly eradicated all music. Or all painting tradition. These are all non-scientific disciplines but they are very important. I believe some of the current pathologies of Western religion come in part from the removal of the original sources from the global Western cultural sphere. -- Jan
