| Subject | Differences between LET and SR. |
| Message-ID | <nbo15t$r5k$1@gioia.aioe.org> |
It is often claimed that LET and SR produce the same results. Consider these two situations. Firstly, let two clocks be moving with the same absolute speed v in the 'aether'. Let a light signal be sent from the mid point between them and the clocks synched so that they register the same arrival times for the signals. Clearly, their sychronization will be very different from the SR version since in that theory both signals move the same distance at c, whereas in the aether, they move at c over UNEQUAL distances. A second difference arises when two observers who are initially at rest in the absolute frame, are made to move away from each other with equal but opposite speeds. According to LET, their pre-synched clocks will contract by the same amount and will therefore experience no rate differences. According to SR however, each clock will run slow in the other's frame.

Things like "synchronisation" and "running slow in the other's frame" are not measurable, and are not results. You would need to show that LET and SR make different predictions about something that can be measured. Sylvia.

Since Larmor's and the Lorentz transforms are drastically different models of mathematics, it would be fvcking silly to claim both SR and LET are based on just the Lorentz transform. Thus, for a better discussion of the subject, it is more interesting to pit Larmor's (LET) and the Lorentz (SR) transforms against each other. <shrug> Although LET and SR are exactly identical under the very special condition when both observers under LET are moving in parallel to each other, in general both predict drastically different outcomes. Under low observer's speeds, it is hard to tell LET and SR apart, but at high speeds, the predictions become drastic. Accelerating an observer to high speeds is still beyond the technology of current technical achievement. In another words, given today's technology, it is impossible to tell LET and SR apart. <shrug>

For example, an observation of the distant clock through a telescope is a measurement. HGW could seek to show that the two theories make different predictions about what would be observed. Sylvia.

But if he follows this thread and uses LET, he will find it makes exactly the same prediction as SR. Note that to calculate in LET he must select some inertial frame to be the ether frame; in SR he can use any frame for the calculation, and if he used that frame for the SR calculation, he would find the two calculations are identical in every detail. (Indeed the ONLY difference is that SR does not apply the sobriquet "ether frame" to it.) Hint: the Lorentz transform of LET is the same as the Lorentz transform of SR. Unfortunately your statement above is not sufficiently well specified to make a calculation/prediction in any theory. Tom Roberts

He can set a clock receding from him at some velocity, and then watch it through a telescope. The measurement results are the images he sees. He can use a theory to predict how the images evolve with time. I don't see that that's insufficiently specified. > > > Tom Roberts I don't doubt that he'll find no difference, but he seems to want to use an approach other than simply taking the Lorentz transform as the result. That's not intrinsically wrong, but he still needs to ensure that he ends up with something well defined, which means something that can be measured. Sylvia.

There are plenty of differences... the SR is just a simplified version of LET, mainy due to the assumption: c = inv. Despite the fact in the real geometry the one-way speed is just: c' = c-v; where v is a speed wrt the ether frame. in general, ie. according to the LET: c'(f) = k(c-vcosf); but the geometry implies: cosf = x/r, and r = ct, therefore: c'(f) = k(c - v x/ct) = kc(1 - v/c x/ct) and now: r' = c't = kc(1 - v/c x/ct)t = kc(t - v/c x/c) = kc(t - xv/c^2); so, if we assume c = inf, then we can derive something simply: r'/c = t' = k(t - xv/c^2); that is just the well known SR's 'time' transform...

The idiot has changed his name again. This moron obviously doesn't know the v^2 = (-v)^2. If two clocks are moving at the same speed in the aether but in opposite directions, the transforms are identical. In SR they are not equal. The transform situation becomes nonsensical.

No, they're not. You are forgetting that v also appears in the LT equations WITHOUT being squared, exactly as appearing in BOTH LET and SR. > In SR they are not equal. Isn't it just the default state of all life...as distinct from mentally ill, indoctrinated morons. Not believing in a non-thing seems pretty sensible to me. I don't think it deserves a name.

I have already down so (on another thread, if not this one), but for just the slow learners, here it is again: "... atheists must do an extensive, comprehensive STUDY before they can become an atheist. "The problem with this is that it is impossible to KNOW that one has done a sufficient study, and I think that most so-called atheists have not made a comprehensive study. And what we have learned about the universe since that time expands the field of study immensely." > Isn't it just the default state of all life... So, has "Wilson" asked his jackrabbit what his default condition is, or is he just making up nonsense noises again? > as distinct from mentally ill, indoctrinated morons. You are the one amply demonstrating mentally ill behavior. Asserting that evidence doesn't exist when it clearly does; e.g., constancy of light speed. > Not believing in a non-thing seems pretty sensible to me. I don't think > it deserves a name. You are the fool who disbelieves in REAL data yet clamors lasciviously to embrace a non-thing; e.g., your abysmally-stupid variable star baloney. "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool." -- Richard P. Feynman Which "Wilson" has done repeatedly.

Ha has eyes but can't see?

They are using them in different purposes. But these are things too complicated for a tiny brain of a relativistic moron.

Ralph, that comparison makes no sense for SR. SR has no noticn of "absolute" speed (remember what the R stand for in SR?). SR has no use/need for an 'aether', either.
