What century do you live in? We do have a queen. Her formal role is even more restricted than that of the German president (although, due to her very long tenure, she has rather more private influence than Gauck). The guilds do still exist, but they are quite irrelevant in modern life. They operate like any other trade association and have no formal powers ... unlike in Germany, where an Innung has quite considerable influence over its trade and profession. In other words, the British carpenters' guild (if such a thing actual exists, it does not for many professions) has no say whatsoever in who may or may not open and run a carpentry workshop -- but just you try to own and operate a Schreinerwerkstatt in Germany without the proper approval and paperwork and Meistertitel. As for the allegedly parasitic life-form of the aristocracy, they have been politically neutered by the reforms of the House of Lords and economically eviscerated by high taxation and inheritance duties. Most British aristocrats live and work just like everyone else ... and those that still sit in their family castles and stately homes work twice as hard. When you have annual heating bills of several hundred thousand and when a new roof can easily set you back a million or so, there's not much left over for the playboy lifestyle...
