Consider two orbits, one so eccentric that it grazes the surface of the sun, and the other that is circular. Let them have the same semi-major axis, a. In the first case, the total distance travelled in an orbit is a bit over 4a. In the second case, the total distance travelled is 2 * Pi * a, or more than 6a. Since they have the same semi-major axis, they have the same orbital period, but the distances travelled, and hence the average velocity (speed, actually) are very different. Sylvia.
