The search for this connection could be understood analogue to finding a path in very rough and uneven terrain, which connects to cities (called 'GR' and 'QM'). Actually you could start to search at both sides or right in the middle. That would make no difference. My own approach was to start at the GR side and build something like particles out of spacetime. The concept is called 'structured spacetime', where particles are such structures of/in spacetime. So spacetime is assumed to be something, but not matter. Matter is like patterns inside this something. For this concept I need only very few assumptions: a point must have features (besides coordinates). So I attach a vector to every point and assume, this would be possible, since points (actually: pointlike elements of spacetime) have features, which could be expressed by a vector. Now I connect the neighbouring points in the way, by which quaternions are multiplied, what is a kind of rotation. With this assumption it is possible to model particles, atoms, fields and cosmological phenomena. I have also written kind of book about this idea, (which nobody wanted to read.)
