It is not a silly claim, but a rather genial idea to assume that space and time are not fixed in order to reconcile Maxwell electrodynamics with the fact that according to all prior observations the speed of light is independent of the motion of the observer of light and the light source. A theory, (the) special (theory of) relativity, that has been confirmed innumerable times, and falsified zero times, in the past 110 years.
