Unions are at least as much about getting better work conditions and better productivity as they are about getting better pay for the rank and file. They tend to be less interesed in getting exceptional rewards for the exceptionally competent, mainly because the exceptionally competent can usually do that for themsselves. -- Bill Sloman, Sydney

It's mostly > about union dues and turf protection. That's what US newspapers say about them. The US as a whole is uniquely anti-union for an advanced industrial country. When I was marginally involved with my trade union in the UK, one of the things I did learn was that US-owned companies were pathologically nervous of unions, and would make all kinds of concessions to avoid having to negoatiate with unions. The German system of having trade union representatives on the secondary boards of all large companies is not one that Americans can actually comprehend. Real unions are interested in the welfare of the people they represent, and that includes making their jobs as productive as possible, in order to preserve them. You should know more about it than most US residents ... -- Bill Sloman, Sydney

Don't hold your breath. What annoys me is that more and more web
'newspapers' are going to all-video... no text :-( I guess to appeal
to the SJW/snowflake crowd who can't read.

Me too. Unfortunately my favorite local newspaper has essentially
died... reduced to innocuous pablum for the masses.

"obscene" is protected speech... much to the consternation of the

I've never found the WSJ terribly useful for anything but business
news and stock info.

I did have quite some road bike and even mountain bike business miles and our IRS does not allow a standard mileage rate for that (in Europe they do). Hurumph! usually update my customers at least weekly... keeping them firmly

You don't daily drive 80MPH+ ?>:-}
Actually I don't do that much heavy braking... only when some dumb-ass
does something stupid in front of me. I tend to float nice-and-easy
with the traffic.

A friend does 25mph and it almost looks like that's idling to him, I can't keep up with that. On bike paths one has to watch for smokey. I was stopped twice on my bike for speeding. In WA state they let me go but in Germany (on a road, not even a bike path) they made me pay right then and there. They gave me a receipt. I wonder what would have happened if I didn't have enough money in German currency on me. > Actually I don't do that much heavy braking... only when some dumb-ass > does something stupid in front of me.
