To get a boost to your ego when clearly knowledgeable people talk about
your "work".  I think 99% of crank posts are about countering the
feeling of being insignificant -- "people are talking about me, I am not
a nobody".  To this end, having ideas that you communicate badly is the
holy grail.  Many the posts will be along the lines of "what do you
mean?" and that's very rewarding attention -- "Yes, my ideas a complex.
Let me break it down for you...".

Even insults are good.  "Your work is junk" is attention.  And if it can
be spun into the "I am obviously challenging the status quo", so much
the better.
