Apparently Terry's never seen PhD engineers struggling to learn how to use a PC. It's easy if you know how to do it, if you don't it isn't. I'm going through a lot of that now--the people I work with have been in financial services for 20+ years, I've been in it for 3. They have difficulty understanding why I don't see certain things as being obvious.

One of my last jobs, before I collapsed into bed with CFS, was with an astronomer whose thing was the Extreme Ultraviolet, and who from time to time would get NASA to send up little satellites to observe and measure same. The Space Sciences Lab was using UNIX (that's how I got the job). I typed papers and sent email and touched base with people at NASA and an observatory in Spain whose staff were going to pick up the transmission from the latest EUVE satellite when it wasn't visible from California.* One day I got an email from a scientist at JPL who had received a text from us and couldn't read it because it wasn't in Microsoft Word. She said, "Okay, I'm a rocket scientist, but I can't figure this out." I very carefully explained how to convert the file into somethg she could read. I used to know stuff like that. I think I've forgotten by now, but I did know once. I think it may have involved "Save As." :) _____ *And we had some serious arguments with them after they explained that of course they wouldn't be observing on the weekend, because everybody would have gone hoem. My boss managed to persuade them to have *some*body on hand when the satellite went by. -- Dorothy J. Heydt Vallejo, California djheydt at gmail dot com

I work with at least ont store manager who literally cannot read an
error message (in English) off a computer screen in front them
because "I don't know anything about computers."
He can't post to Usenet, either.
I didn't say "it's simple." I said "It's as simple as things you
*already* do."
Try to pay attention, dumbass.
Dorothy's issue isn't that she can't handle ebooks. It's that she's
too police to tell people to STFU about shit she's not interested
in.

If you want people to act (or not act) in a certain way, and they
persistently don't act (or act) in that way, it is - literally -
insane to expect them to change when you do not communicate to them
what you wish.
Did you *really* need that explained to you? Yes, apparently, you
did. Apparently, that's far too subtle and complicated a concept
for you.

I'm not one of the several people who keep trying to convince her
to try something she's clearly not interested in trying.

I had to figure out for myself how to double-click a mouse.
The problem I had was that sometimes, it would not work. I would
just get a click. I finally tracked it down to that sometimes, the
mouse was moving just a bit between the two clicks. I worked out a
way of holding the mouse more securely, and that ended the problem.
Until then, though, I had mysterious failures.
When you are starting with something, it might not take much to
derail you.

When the Mac was just about to be released, I was working for the UCB Computer Center, helping edit a monthly newsletter. We used UNIX software (n/troff, -ms, eqn, and tbl, all fairly hairy, but I had people physically present to teach them to me :) ). So when Apple offered us a pre-release Mac to test out, I volunteered. I couldn't make it do anything, so I brought Hal in. He couldn't make it speak either. We saw icons on the desktop, but couldn't open them. We read all the documentation from cover to cover and still couldn't figure it out. Quite by accident, Hal double-clicked on something and it opened. Whoever had written the documentation had been using the Mac in its various stages of development for so long, s/he hadn't *realized* s/he hadn't mentioned "to open a program, double-click on the icon." So now I knew that, so I played around with the thing for a while and sent in a report. By the time the Mac actually launched, the documentation did mention double-clicking. -- Dorothy J. It is hard to tell tone on USENET. I have encountered people who
would mean that.

Sarcasm translates to the written word about as well as common sense
does. Which is to say, very, very poorly.

I did mention you want an older version of the PC Kindle program.
It's readily available if you put even a little effort into it.

If that's the hard way, the easy way must pretty much do itself
while you're in the bathroom.

I'm wondering why he's recommending a command line rename, when it
can be done just as easily in Windows Explorer. (You would need to
turn on file extensions to see the ".exe," but that's no more steps
than opening a command prompt.)
