And of course, that particular dynamic duo had echoes and repercussions...

Thus, Princess Koriand'r, an old flame of Robin's... after he grew up, and had 
been replaced by other Robins as Batman's sidekick... was occasionally referred 
to him affectionately as a flamebird... Dick Grayson's new superhero name at 
the time was Nightwing.

Aside from Superman and Jimmy Olsen operating under the names "Nightwing" and "Flamebird" in Kandor in one episode when Superman was hunted under a false accusation that he was deliberately keeping Kandor from enlarging... I thought there was another adventure where Batman was Nightwing instead of Superman, but my memory is playing tricks on me. However, I see that Van-Zee and Ak-Var took over these identities for a while in the later Silver Age... and there's been a recent adventure or two involving a duo of two women...

Ah, yes I had just learned to read when the Silver Age hit its stride,
and saw all the AoS episodes in rerun.

The first comics depictions of K had it colored red.  The main isotope
was changed to green later.

Okay, I don't remember that one, but I do remember an "end of the
world" story from, I think, the 1950s in _Galaxy._  Newspapers

     He may have had some points, but it was more his language was
stating rather than any showing.  He ended up telling me more about
himself than the novel.  Fortunately, I already had read it.

When I first read Farnham's Freehold, I read it as a novel for entertainment, 
and I was willing to allow that Robert Heinlein wasn't *intending* to stir up 
racist attitudes.

However, that reviewers are going to approach a novel which depicts a future in 
which the black people take over after a nuclear war... and that future 
combines the autocracy and polygamy of Islam with... cannibalism... with an axe 
to grind is *hardly* surprising. Back when it was written, people didn't worry 
about stereotyping, but the consciousness today is different.

It depends on whether you go with the subject line or the spec that
Mark gave in his question -- specifically, whether the end of the
world as we know it is good enough, or if it has to be the end of
the world, period. In LUCIFER'S HAMMER, the public knew that it was
gonna *hurt*, but "It's going to extinctify us" was far from a
universal belief. I think.

VERY far - Up until minutes, perhaps only seconds, before the first 
impact, "The Hammer" was expected to be nothing more than a near miss. A 
comparative handful of the population thought it would indeed hit, and 
went into prepper mode for it, but most of the world dismissed those 
folks as nutcases - victims of "Hammer Fever" - and expected nothing 
more serious than a few nights of really spectacular looking, but 
harmless, meteor showers as the earth passed through the outbound tail.
