I hope nobody skipped the book and went to the movie. The movie is horrible.

I would hope they skipped the book and went to the short story.

I thought it was a book of short stories. I have this copy:

Nightfall was a short story by Isaac Asimov, originally published in 1941, that was the one featured in that collection (published in 1969).

It was later - 1990 - turned into a novel with Robert Silverberg as co-author.

There was a novelization much later. Most of the book is after the
night of terror.

It is:

The title of a short story
The title of a collection that contains the short story
The title of a novel based on the short story
The title of a movie based on the short story
The title of a completely unrelated Canadian anthology-style spec fic
radio show.

I pointed them at the short story.

It never occurred to me to even mention to them there was a novel and a movie.

I am sorry that I brought up the movie. It was so bad that half of the people left the theater before it was over and demanded their
money back. My wife now uses it to taunt me when I suggest going to see movies without a known review.

There was also a multimedia planetarium show sometime back in the 80s
pretty sure while Asimov was still with us. Don't know if it was a
local production and don't know if anyone bothered to get permission.

I saw the movie on Superchannel, something like HBO, and I enjoyed it.

Did you see this movie rated 2.4 out of 10 on IMDB ? There are five movies with Nightfall in the name.

Every 2050 years, on a day when all but one of the planet's 6 suns has set, a moon gets in front of that sun, leading to a multi-hour eclipse which allows the people to see a very large number of stars. The combination of the darkness and the stars drives everyone mad.

How is the planet able to hang onto a satellite that is so far away that it takes 2050 years to complete an orbit?

Thanks to a complete lack of knowledge of celestial mechanics.

Not that Cixin Liu did better.

Wait...it doesn't take 2050 years to complete an orbit. It's just 2050
years between an eclipse that happens when all except the smallest suns
are on the other side of the planet. Of course in order for this to
work the planet would have to have a very small land mass.

It's also my understanding that it takes about 2050 years for the Alpha
sun and the two distant companion pairs to simultaneously set. At that
point the Beta sun is left alone in the sky so darkness ensues when a
non-luminous planetary body eclipses Beta.

The non-luminous planet may very well eclipse Beta every day but it only
causes a black out on the planet Lagash when the other five suns are
antipodal to Saro City. An antipodal event that occurs approximately
every 2050 years.

What if Lagash and another planet of equal size rotate about each other?
Do the celestial mechanics work any better?

Thank you,

Irrecoverably dark, total eclipse
Without all hope of day!

It was my understanding that such an event would occur once every few years, but that the eclipse happens once every 2050 years.

Wouldn't that make the eclipses more frequent?

I'm not sure how that's different from what I said.

It doesn't change the problem that the eclipse is just not going to
black out the whole planet.

A big Moon covering a small sun.
