-----Original Message----- From: The Starmaker Sent: Saturday, August 29, 2015 3:55 AM Newsgroups: rec.arts.sf.written,sci.physics,sci.physics.relativity,alt.astronomy Subject: Re: parallel universe <snip> But what most people don't know is that.. parallel universe is an invention by the science fiction community, not the scientific community. So, when I see members of the 'scientific community' talking about parallel universe...they are talking about a subject invented by the science fiction community. when I see members of the 'science fiction community' talking about parallel universe...they are talking about a subject invented by the 'science fiction community'...but they believe it was invented by the 'scientific community'. Tony replied: Perhaps a scientific description of a parallel universe concept could spring from Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. For example, in 1954, a young student at Princeton University named Hugh Everett proposed a radical supposition that differed from the popular models of quantum mechanics. Everett did not believe that observation causes quantum matter to stop behaving in multiple forms. Instead, he argued that observation of quantum matter creates a split in the universe. In other words, the universe makes copies of itself to account for all the possibilities and these duplicates will proceed independently.

_The Lathe of Heaven_ is an excellent example. There's also _Thrice Upon
a Time_.
Can a double-slit apparatus and a detector function as a parallel
universe generator? You can randomly place the detector at slit A to
force a photon to pass through slit B and versa vice. The fly in the
ointment is that in your "home universe" you *always* randomly place the
detector in the same place. :(
Ouspensky argues that six dimensional space is continuous. You can take
a pencil on a table and either throw it or not throw it on the floor,
and derive two parallel universes. But, you can not throw an orange on
the floor that was never on the table in the first place.

Would universes merge - if the pencil is on the table, does it matter whether you put it there or your wife did? This could be a very fruitful field to explore regarding household chores, until she catches on.

What a horrible typo. "The Gostak and the Doshes" was in the March 1930 (not 1939) issue of Amazing Stories.

Three weeks later and there's time enough at last in my hectic schedule
to read this story. Thank you. The story appeals to me on many levels.
This part of the story dovetails with other recent threads:
The fourth dimension is just as much *here* as anywhere else.
Right here around you and me things exist and go forward in
the fourth dimension; but we do not see them and are not
conscious of them, because we are confined to our own three.
Secondly; if we name the four coordinates as Einstein does,
x, y, z, and t, then we exist in x, y, z, and move freely
about in them; but are powerless to move in t. Why? Because
t is the time dimension; and the time dimension is a difficult
one for biological structures that depend on irreversible
chemical reactions for their existence.
Fourth dimension talk opens the door to Aristotle. [1] _The Cambridge_
_Companion to Science Fiction_ mentions Aristotle in its "Politics and
science fiction" chapter. Perhaps that makes Aristotle a primordial
science fiction writer? If so, Aristotle may qualify to serve as
fourth dimensional scapegoat in another thread. :)
The best takeaway for me is the idea that biological structures depend
upon irreversible chemical reactions. That makes a Wellsian open air
time unfeasible. Because a boundary must exist between hypertime of the
outside world and the "normal time" of a time traveling organism.
It's similar to the problems encountered in "Perry Rhodan: Prisoner of
Time." The organism must breath an atmosphere that contains "normal
inertia" molecules. A hermetically sealed, "timetight," vessel seems
mandatory for any time machine.
Hypertime also seems relative. The Wellsian time machine induces
?exogenous? hypertime in that the outside world moves faster. While the
Rhodan machine induces ?endogenous? hypertime in that the outside world
moves slower.
The transforms of "The Gostak and the Doshes" tickle my mathematical
mind. It adds a dash of entertainment to Calc II's parametric equations.
Finally, there's the moral of the story. "The Gostak distims the
doshes." The phrase "conscientious objector" needs to be popularized
again. May tomorrow's Occupy Peace initiative at a historic New York
City intersection [2] do the trick.
