A few years ago I read "The Light of Other Days" by Steven Baxter and Arthur C. Clarke, and if I'm remembering right the story starts with the discovery that a giant meteor is going to destroy the Earth in a few centuries and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it. The info is released to the public, and I'm thinking it's going to be a story about how people would react to the knowledge that the human race has no future. Instead the book immediately dropped that plot line (I'm not sure why it was introduced in the first place) and changed gears to be about a guy who invented a mini-wormhole technology that let everyone spy on everyone else, and the subsequent breakdown of society. -- Bob
