SubjectThe mess of package names
Message-ID<urvUt-AH-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hi all,
While this may seem to be a bit off topic, I feel that I may get answers
faster here than any where else. This problem applies to Debian, Ubuntu
and, to some extent, Mac OS.

I have spent the last month and a half ( or longer) trying to compile
and link a program called Elmer FEM. The problem that I keep running
into is the naming practices in Elmer (and all the documents) vs
Debian/Ubuntu. Elmer requires the following libraries:
Mumps, MPI, OpenMP, FETI4I as a minimum. Hypre and trilinos have to be
compiled from source code. The problem is that none if the four
libraries go under the names mentioned above. By loading everything that
even came close to the Elmer names I finally got a build that failed in
the make process (the package uses cmake). The failure is due to the
missing FETI4I library which have never found.

What I need is a cross reference between Mumps, MPI, OpenMP and FETI4I
and the library names in the Debian and Ubuntu repositories.

Please, please help. Very frustrated.

Gary R.

A quick skimming of the web suggests that the Elmer FEM
developers aren't actually interested in keeping their
documentation up to date. At all.

If you really want to use this software rather than fiddle
with compiling it, you might want to download their virtual
machine image and just run that.

Not very satisfying, I know.

Mumps ? Is there a use case for swollen cheeks ?

If i know the name of files which are missing, e.g. from an example program
which has
  #include "mpi.h"
  #include "dmumps_c.h"
then i run queries like:

  apt-file search dmumps_c.h | less

which then delivers

  libmumps-dev: /usr/include/dmumps_c.h

A click on "homepage" of the "links" section iat the left edge of
  https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/libmumps-dev
brings me to the home of "MUMPS : a parallel sparse direct solver".
Would go nicely with a FEM program.

A bit overwhelmimg is the result of

  apt-file search mpi.h | less

from which i would pick e.g.

  libopenmpi-dev: /usr/lib/openmpi/include/mpi.h

to get to "A High Performance Message Passing Library".

No match with apt-file search "feti4i".
Are you sure that this should not come from Elmer itself ?

After some forth and back i end up in
  https://code.it4i.cz/mec059/elmer/blob/feti4i/cmake/Modules/FindFETI4I.cmake
which has
  SET(_feti4iIfaceF90 "feti4i_mod.F90")
  SET(_feti4iLibName "libfeti4i.so")

The only noteworthy result for these names by Google is inside Elmer:
  https://code.it4i.cz/mec059/elmer/blob/d3f801da1b4a16c9ac3e73e82e9faf7d6dcaa1c1/feti4i/feti4i_mod.F90
Same if i search for "libfeti4i.so".

Have a nice day :)

OpenMP is not a library. It is an extension of C to allow convenient
parallel programming. It is enabled in GCC with “-fopenmp” IIRC.

I can not be of help with the rest.

About all I can do is sympathize -- if the developers of Elmer don't
want to give you hints as to where to get the libraries it depends on,
you're sort of on your own. Applying my favorite heuristics (packages
for libraries start with "lib", and development packages end in "-dev"),
I was able to find

    libmumps-dev
    libmpich-dev

I also found libopenmpi-dev, which seems to be another implementation of
MPI. As for openMP and FETI4I -- sorry.

Thank you for all your replies. I now have managed to decipher enough to
get Elmer running. I'm going to post the results on the Elmer Forum and
am thinking about filing a bug report suggesting that the results be
included in the README file. Well on to the next problem.

Thanks again.

Yay. I tried a couple pokes at this, too. I saw those dotCZ pages. I
wondered if they would work. :)

I know you say you've put together what you need, but what about
Github for later? Yes, I do know Github has its fans and detractors:
Am mentioning it because Github was almost the only thing I found that
*sounded like* it might be what was needed:

https://github.com/ElmerCSC/elmerfem/blob/devel/cmake/Modules/FindFETI4I.cmake

If that doesn't work, the front page is here:

https://github.com/ElmerCSC/elmerfem/

That first one was a search that was very strange. It seemed to pick
out single letters and numbers to match those, not the whole word
only. It's surely by design. :)

Cindy :)
