I have ugly fonts in thunderbird after updating my Debian sid today.

It happens both in the body of mail (received and sent) and in the
interface. The problem is also present on my second computer with
different hardware but some software (Xfce + Debian sid).

This mail was rejected by the Debian mailing list the first time with the
error

"550 5.6.0 improper use of 8-bit data in message header"

so I am gessing the font problem must be a encoding one.

The update did not delete any package. It must be a bug.

I am using Xfce on sid and do not see any font corruption in
thunderbird. What are your desktop font settings?

I am using Liberation Sans for desktop and GUI, full hinting, and in
/etc/environment I have:
FREETYPE_PROPERTIES=truetype:interpreter-version=35

We got a tiny fonts-liberation update but I did not notice any change.

Kind regards,

Thanks for the answer,

I using "Sans" font family for xfce and sans-serif for thunderbird.

Changing to Liberation Sans does not change the
problem (the same for the hinting setting). I have nothing in
/etc/environment and if I copy/paste what you have, it does not fix the bug.

The /etc/environment setting only specifies the default environment; in
order to make it take effect, you'd have to reboot.

To check without rebooting, try running

FREETYPE_PROPERTIES=truetype:interpreter-version=35 thunderbird

from a terminal (assuming 'thunderbird' is the name of the executable in
your PATH which launches the program).

No, you just have to login again (or trigger whatever else you're doing
that uses the pam_env module). Unless this is yet another thing where
GNOME breaks unix.

Of course, /etc/environment is basically useless for anything complex,
because you can't pull shell parameter expansions in it. Only constant
strings.

Hmm. Okay, I'll admit that I didn't specifically test this - but I'm
used to launching things from a WM menu, and that inherits environment
from the WM, which inherits it from either X or the ~/.xinitrc which
gets invoked (eventually) from startx, which inherits it from the
console where I logged in in the first place.

Resetting that environment would seem to require shutting down X and
re-launching it, and probably logging out at that console and logging
back in before the re-launch, and by the time I've closed things down
that far I'm close enough to fully shut down that I might as well reboot
(to pick up kernel updates, etc.) anyway.

And since most people use GUI login nowadays, which AFAIK involves X
getting invoked even before login occurs, I would have expected that
even logging all the way out wouldn't be enough to get the X environment
fully reloaded.

It's entirely possible that nothing in my stack except /bin/login itself
(if even that) draws on PAM at all.

Noted, but it does seem to work well for this purpose.

Is there an obvious place where this file is documented? 'man
environment' is the only thing that springs to my mind, barring Google
searches, and that turns up no entries.

pam_env(8)

You may also want to try "grep -r pam_env /etc/pam.d" to see which
services are configured to use pam_env on your system.

If you use a display manager, it's probably in that list. They serve
the same role as login(1), and are often configured similarly.

It's the latest freetype upgrade causing this for users which use
subpixel antialiasing. Thunderbird needs to be updated to cope with the
changes in freetype 2.8.1

see https://bugs.debian.org/878870

Aha! So the reason I do not see this defect is my use of the old engine
(the one that supports hinting) through a FREETYPE_PROPERTIES setting.

Pétur, please try starting thunderbird with:

FREETYPE_PROPERTIES=truetype:interpreter-version=35 thunderbird

Kind regards,

Thanks Michael, the bug is indeed caused by libfreetype6 update.

@Ben: For my, the command:

"FREETYPE_PROPERTIES=truetype:interpreter-version=35 thunderbird"

didn't fix it. I did reboot when I change my /etc/environment for your.
It wasn't working either.

The temporary solution for me is to downgrade libfreetype6 to testing. I
don't have the bug after that. Another fix is to deactivate the
antialiasing setting (but you have less beautiful fonts everywhere).

Pétùr
