#173619 — alt F2 in kde does not work

Subjectalt F2 in kde does not work
Message-ID<sucQ1-2td-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
When I press alt F2 and enter konsole in the window, nothing happens.
The expected behaviour is to start a konsole window. Does anyone know
which command/package is responsible for the alt+F2 functionality in
KDE?

My machine is a mixture of Stable and Testing.

Have you checked the global keyboard shortcuts ?

Start the "System Settings". Click on the "Shortcuts and Gestures" icon.
Select the "Global Keyboard Shortcut" section on the left. In The "Kde
component" drop down list, select "Run Command Interface". On my KDE, the "Run
Command" entry is set to Alt+F2.

When I do K button -> "System Settings" there is no "Shortcuts and
Gestures" icon. Even if I search for "Shortcuts and Gestures" in the
search window on the top right of "System Settings" window, nothing
happens. What is the name of the program that runs "System Settings"?
Perhaps we can compare versions of the two between our systems.

Did you try Ctrl+Alt+F2? That's what's always worked for me.

That does not work for here. Ctrl+Alt+F2 takes me to the virtual
console 2. It is a black screen asking for login and password.

I don't know offhand, but have some questions:

   * Presumably you can start a konsole from the K menu using the mouse?

   * Can you start a konsole from within that konsole, by typing konsole at
the prompt? If not, does it work if you su to root?

   * Can you start any other applications from <alt><F2> textbox?

I suspect that your problem is not with the <alt>F2> functionaolity but
instead with konsole, but answers to the above questions will help?

Yes. I can start konsole with K button -> Applications -> System -> konsole

It works. But there are some warnings on the original konsole when I do this.

rajulocal@hogwarts ~ % konsole
kf5.kcoreaddons.kaboutdata: Could not initialize the equivalent
properties of Q*Application: no instance (yet) existing.
Could not load profile from "/usr/share/kde4/apps/konsole/Shell.profile"

No. I see the same issue with all the applications when trying to
start with Alt + F2

In gtk and kde Alt+F2 brings up the run dialog, it's easier for me to
click on the icon from the Start-menu or or Quick-launch, but I'm a
point and click guy. I'll shut-up now. :)

That's for something very different from what the OP is after, unless
I've misread the post. AIUI, OP wants to run KDE's konsole (with a k),
not start a console (with a c).

That is correct Brad. I am interested in starting konsole that comes
as part of KDE. I do not have any issues with the virtual console.

Is it just konsole that fails to run, or does the problem affect other
issued commands/programs?

If it's just konsole, there may be a konsole running that didn't quit
cleanly. Check you system activity for a running konsole (I use
KSysGuard to check). If konsole exists, kill it, then try issuing the
command via alt-f2 again.

Good point.

Although I get the impression that it once worked, but doesn't now. I

it starts a little input window, where I have to / can input my wanted command

Which is exactly what the OP was expecting to happen. Again, IIUC.

Ok, I understand. Maybe this will help:

I sometimes in the past had had the problem, that konsole did not want to
start. However, it worked, when I started Alt-F2, then started Xterm. Within
xterm I could start konsole, which did not want to start from the icon.

This also got the advantage, that I saw any error messages and saw what
happened. When this does not show enough information, you can start konsole
with strace (strace konsole). Mostly then konsole started. If it is starting,
then close everything and REBOOT (do not just start kde again, reboot!)

Maybe it is a rights problem? Just do "su -p" and you can start any
application, even graphical apps, as a normal user. Maybe this shows also more
information.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Happy hacking!

Hans

This sounds much like I experienced too. I discovered that killing a
konsole that shut down improperly was the culprit. I've never got to
the bottom of it(1) but finding, and killing that konsole, with KSysGuard
solved the problem.

(1) Sometimes, konsole crashed on exit, but I'm not 100% sure that this
was always the case when konsole would not start subsequently(2).

(2) The problem hasn't occurred here for several months, so I've not
been able to check.

yeah, ksysguard is one of my favourite tools. It is working, even when kill -9
something does not work. Don't know, how they managed, to be able to do this.
Great tool!

Confirmed. I believe, something is left over, when konsole is not ended
properly. By starting konsole again, I think, these parts are overwritten and
deleted when the next normal ending of konsole was initiated.

Also confirmed. I am running debian/testing and konsole is starting well for
months.

Sometimes too often :-) (I suppose, you know about the bug with konsole and
nvidia driver).

Best

No, I didn't. I did a quick search to find out. Since I always close
konsole by typing 'exit' (several reports it reduces the likelihood
of the problem arising) rather than by simply closing the window, I may
have got lucky and avoided the problem.

I *do* have an nVidia GPU, BTW. :-)
